Pre-school Closure

I'm in an unfortunate situation. My pre-school has been established in a local church hall for over 30 years. Twelve years ago I bought the business from the lady who started the pre-school and had run it up until then. In those twelve years we have had three good Ofsted reports. The pre-school has a high reputation locally, is usually full with a waiting list and was making a small profit. We knew that the church was raising moiney to rebuild its hall which is showing its age and is generally in a pretty poor condition. I understood that the new hall was to be built in the church grounds with our hall to be demolished once the new hall was completed. However a few…

Mark Making Area
by Guest- 1 reply

I feel our mark making area is lacking in thought and imagination and like to know what type of activities you provide in this area. We already do (not all at the same time!!!) telephones and note pads, clipboards, old tax forms, plain paper, crayons, felt tips, pencils, chalks, ink stamps, stencils to name a few. I want the area to look inviting, creative and inspiring and at the moment I'm just not feeling it!!!!!

Feelings/helpful Trees
by Guest- 3 replies

Hi there, I have been thinking about using some kind of feelings tree and/or one where a child's name is added when they do something kind/helpful with a reward system at the end of the week/term. These have been mentioned before but I am having trouble finding anything on here. Ideally, I would like to use a real branch for the tree at the children's level where they can add the 'leaves' themselves. Does anyone have any ideas or pictures that I can see and whether these have worked well in your settings please?

Hi All, We have a couple of families who continually turn up late to collect their children but all of the offending families only use NEF; does anyone know if it's legal to set up a fining system? For one family, they have twins, the children will be dropped off at obscure times (have repeatedly said how difficult this is for the children as they're quite withdrawn already) and are then collected between 5 and 15 mintues late. We run a lunch club so staff are around but only 2 which means we go over ratios if we already have 15 or 16 for lunch. The families who are late at the end of the day, deliberately so in my opinion as they live very locally, 5 minutes walk awa…

I have been reading about Tuff Spots on the forum and realise it is a kind of messy area where the children can explore different messy items with resources to extend. Although we do all kinds of messy play we normally just have them in trays on tables etc. and I just wondered could someone explain to me exactly what the tuff spot is physically about. Such as what is the stuff in, where in the room do you have it and do the children access it independently, do you get a lot of mess etc. etc. Also wanted to say thanks to everyone for all the excellent info and help I have gained from reading on the forum. I have replied to a few posts but this is the first time I have…

Welfare Requirements...space Etc
by Guest- 13 replies

Hi all Looking through the welfare requirments about pace for children it says 2 yrs old 2.5 m sq and 3-5 yrs 2.3 m sq. Is this free space or total size of the room? so taking typical day we have 5 2yrs old and 10 3 yrs olds so if working it out correctly must have a room at least 36 m sq (sorry just cant visualise it! Is that big?). It also says that there must be able to be ease of access (or something like it). rason why i am asking i that at the mo we are in a huge hall but we have been offered a classroom with the school next door. supervisor is not sure. We think it is too small for us (plus there are other issues) However, berore meeting at the school we need to…

Having recently moved into the early Years sector from a school environment Iam relatively new to early years and just needed some ideas, advice and / or guidance please. I have been asked to work on improving behaviour in our 3-5 room within the nursery. Having observed the current situation it is eveident that the staff often forget to praise the children for doing well and that the children's behaviour is an attempt to gain attention. I have suggested a similar project to one i used in a school nursery and i have set up a rewards board. each child has their own picture and when they are spotted doing something well they are able to move their picture along. …

Just out of interest, how many of you adopt an introduction, main part and then a plenary as the structure for your focus activity?
