Hello all, I need help with organising the garden, i am not sure how myself and staff can organise the garden to ensure that the children can play and learn at the same time and also cover the 6 areas. We have a lot of physical equipment, sand and water, e.t.c, but i want it to be more interesting and exciting for the children. I basically need help in arranging the different areas, items that can be put out permanently i.e waterproof, we have a shade incase it rains. Thank you.

Do you use glitter with under threes or is this not allowed for health and safety reasons? I am asking because a local play group has been using it in dough etc. and a parent pointed out that it should only be used with over threes.

Hello, I've just taken over a 3-5 room in a day nursery after being off on mat leave and was previously in the baby unit. This means I have little experience of this age group and since my manager is not so helpful I thought i'd ask you as you are! I need to change my room round as I've noticed in the last two weeks that some areas of the room are hardly used and others seam too small (home corner) My question is it there an ideal layout for a preschool room, what areas should be together? I'm considering moving the mark making area next to the art/sensory would this be too much in one area??? Also I've been told I have a discovery area, which as the moment co…

Help!

I need to devise a baseline system for our nursery and don't know where to start really. I've thought of the obvious things we can assess but not sure what format it should take or how often it should be done. Does anybody have any ideas? The head of assessment wants me to use the eyeprofile, can this be used for nursery children? Or has anybody used ASPECTS? I would be most grateful for any help at all. Thanks.

Temper Tantrums

We have a child in our setting who sometimes comes in without any problem. However for weeks now she has been having bigger and bigger temper tantrums as Mum tries to leave. She screams, flings herself on the floor, kicks any adult who comes near her, tries to run out of the door. Within a very short time of Mum leaving she 'swtches off' becomes her usual sunny self and helps to set out the small group areas with her key person or another adult. She seems to enjoy the rest of the session and greets Mum with a huge smile at the end. This morning it went completely haywire. She would not come upstairs into the setting at all. Mum couldn't stand it any longer (not surpr…

I am worried about a child in playgroup, he is three and a half, has a lack of social skills, lashes out at others, spits at you when addressing an issue and now....... every time we speak to child regarding behavior issues he poo's him self ....fab!(Before Christmas he would go to the loo as normal) Today he has not had a good session, two changes of clothes and need less to say he has been very disruptive. I have been speaking to mum regularly, she is at her wits end. She tells me he pooed nine times yesterday at home as soon as she spoke to him regarding his behavior. As we where talking at the end of the session the child came over and punched her proper hard, i'm…
