Can anyone answer this? At times we have offered red lentils etc as an alternative to sand for pouring and spooning. When we went to open the packet this week we noticed that it says "do not eat uncooked", the same wording is on split peas and other alternatives. Whilst we do not allow our children to eat them, as a special needs nursery, we cannot be sure that someone won't attempt to put them into their mouth. Does anyone else use lentils? Is there a way round this? What is the problem, is there a health and safety requirement that I have overlooked. We do of course offer textures of a more edible nature like pasta but we do like to vary our options. H…

Outdoor Play
by Guest- 1 reply

Hi all, I am very much in favour of outdoor play whenever, regardless of weather. however am hitting a wall with the staff in the younger rooms (baby room and toddler room so 3 months to two years age range). the staff in these rooms will not take their children out if it has been raining since the floor is wet and they have some non walkers ( they do not go out at all in the rain). at the moment we do not have the money to buy all in one waterproofs for the children so i am not really able to push the issue of them taking the children outside if the ground is wet. but wondered how other settings manage outdoor play (in wet weather) for the younger children. Da…

HI Could I ask for your knowledge on the indoor / outdoor environment. I voluntarily work in a pre-school completing my foundation degree of which I am their chair person. Last week I took 6 children out in the rain (with wellies, raincoats etc) to visit their surroundings with a newly qualifed member of staff. During this we went puddle hopping!!!!!!!! with great enjoyment. Lots of discriptive language used and happy wet children. The older member of stafff refused to come along as it was Raining! although the week before she was queit happy to. There are two members of staff who are now stating that they will not put children in donated wellies "Co…

Transition To Reception
by Guest- 7 replies

Hi, Is there anyone out there who will please share their pro-forma for transition from Pre-school to Reception. In the past we have written a 'leavers report' which included the 6 areas of learning..ELG's etc..but I am aware that this will now be slightly different to include EYFS...we are finding it hard to write anything EXTRA about each child as we now seem to write absolutely everything in their 'learning journey' folder including all evidence, photos etc..so what else is others finding to write on the leavers report...?? Sorry if this doesnt make much sense...am totally puzzled!! Thanks again to all of you for your continued support. xx

please convince me that keypersons are a great thing. We are preschool 3 full time staff 2 partime. approx 45 children. generally each keyperson has their own children for observations. learning journals are filled out by all staff. one person normally me or deputy great children as they come to hallway then they go into main room where other 2 staff are. other member generally comes in after children arrive. when children go home again one person meets parents. we had two new children turn up at same time today same keyperson so keyperson and other member of staff had to show them where everthing was. regarding nappy changes all staff do any children dep…

Hi Just wondered how you would handle the following: Child is 4 yrs old in pre-chool every morning and school every afternoon. Behaviour gone down hill at pre-school in that will not do as asked eg sit down at circle time, come when asked to line up etc. Have appraoched her and said she must do as teacher says etc but she says no and runs away! Have told her to sit on chair for 4 mins and think about her unacceptable behaviour, what she should be doing etc etc...but refuses to sit on chair and runs round saying no....what would you do next? Thanks

Careplans

Hi At our Pre-school we have been completing our local councils Quality Framework and this has highlighted the need for us to complete careplans for all our children. Unfortunately, our mentor was unable to provide much assistance of where we could obtain a template, after spending quite a lot of time researching the only tempate we can find is the one in the Managing Medicines in Schools booklet which doesn't cover things like toileting, etc so not suitable. Does anybody have a blank template, they could let me look at, to see if we can come up with a template for our setting. Many thanks Penny

Hi everyone, we are and have always been registered to take children from 2 years old. Up until now we have stuck to 2 1/2, we are now considering lowering this to 2 to try to build up numbers, especially in the afternoons. My questions is to you all.......can you all start throwing at me the fors and against for this decision. Many thanks mrsb

Parent /keyperson Meetings
by Guest- 8 replies

Hi Just wondered how you made your individual parent meeting work for you? Do you ask certain questions? Seems a good time to me to get to know parents more, ask about child at home etc. Do you say Jonny does this and that (which Im sure they may already know??) Never done any before so not really sure of the format (will obviously speak to supervisor but not in until Fri!). Only thing is that these have to take place during the session (comm wont pay for us to do it any other time)...so not the most relaxing of things. Thanks for info (as usual! )

Staffing

Hello everyone, I've just been looking at some of the discussions about flexible hours and offering 15 hours per week. I wonder if anyone could help me with a legal point. I work in a school nursery as the nursery teacher and I'm fortunate enough to have a full time nursery nurse which is currently job shared by 2 people and for 3 days a week an NVQ3 trainee. If we extended our current 2.5 hours sessions (9.00 - 11.30 and 11.45 -3.15 to fit with school times) by offering lunch at school would the children be able to be supervised by an unqualified mealtime assistant for those half hours? Also as we are in a fairly deprived area would children be entitiled to free schoo…
