Moving Play On
by Guest- 4 replies

Has anyone got any suggestions for how I can develop play within our Nursery? Every situation- outdoor, small world etc.etc. just seems to end up with a goodies v baddies situation or a giant comes along! Our children seem to find it very hard to play and I'm conscious that they need to be shown and invovled before they can do it for themselves. How can I move their play on without directing it too much> Thanks

Parent Rota's

At the moment we have a 'small' calender on display in the cloakroom area for parents to put their names down to come into nursery. This is not used well but feel it's not really that inviting or noticeable. I would like to make this area a more prominent feature so that I am ensuring parents can actually see it.....how do you display your parents rota and how effective is it in encouraging parents in?

We are having a visit on Wednesday afternoon from someone from 'the office' Department for Children, Schools and Families wanting to know what the challenges are of providing quality childcare in a rural setting. We are extremely rural - tiny Cumbrian village, drawing children from surrounding villages - so the obvious point is the distances that children have to travel to come to us - the furthest comes 8 miles along very winding country lanes. My second point is that to attract these children from far-flung villages we have to keep our session fees down to £5 and then of course our salaries are low too. Even though we are 'in the middle of nowhere' there isn't any ap…

Hello everyone, I am going to have a rant. I have just been reading posts about committees and packing away and low wages and the EYFS and village halls, its made me a bit mad- hence the rant. Is it me or is it all wrong? We have admitedly and proven by reasearch and experience, one of the most important jobs in a childs life- laying the foundations for life long learning and ensuring children feel secure and cared for and that they have equal opportunities and access to a rich learning environment and freedom for expression and choice and to have wonderful experiences that enrich their lives. The government recognises this and wants to raise the standard of early…

I need some advise please. We had a child start in September, EAL but excellent English. She had never been in a setting before. She is 3 1/2. At the beginning of term on arrival at the setting she would become very upset and cry so much she would make herself sick. This went on for the first two weeks. She made an attachment to me and after me giving her my full attention for 2 whole sessions she settled and coming into the setting was no longer a problem, the sickness stopped. The problem has now shifted. My preschool is in a school and we have access to the grounds, we also have to go into the school grounds for fire drills etc. This little girl has now sta…

Observed Activity For Interview
by Guest- 14 replies

Having an interview fairly soon and am expected to prepare a 15 minute activity for a small froup of 2 year olds, explain how it is connected to Early Learning Goals, as well as advise the staff on a follow-up activity. So, here we are. I was thinking about reading aloud a short story about falling leaves from a book with big bright pictures followed by treasure basket with autumn leaves form different trees. The basket would be covered, so children would be asked to pop in their hands inside to explore and guess. Then, leaves would be taken out, sorted by colour, shape and size. After that I would sing an action song about autumn leaves (Twinkle twinkle little star…

Right I have been told verbally that there are some trees that need to come down by the church. One of which is over the outside play area. We went out yesterday and I had a look therefore I feel that I need advice in this matter. One of our children's older siblings was in an accident and I feel that her parents may not feel happy that we are out there. Now my feeling is that we need to play out according to the EYFS but Health and Saftey of the children is more impoartant. What should I do next? Thank you Beth

Changing Children
by Guest- 29 replies

Hi everyone, could anyone tell me their views about changing children when they have wet/soiled themselves. Just that in our practice it is not always possible to have another person present when changing the child. The last place i worked always said you had to have a second person there, but this is not always possible. The only way round this is to bring the child out of the toilet so that they are on view in front of other staff when changing. but i feel this is unfair on the child. What is everyone elses view on this thanks christine 0258

Shh! Quiet Room

Dear friends, I'm looking for independent activity ideas for children in a quiet classroom. Please can you help me? These first few weeks have been educational and even after a few years in the business the children continue to surprise and delight me! Initial observations have been interesting as the childrens characters are understood and all the details of who prefers to do what, where and how become evident. What to do when three children will not change for PE, from their point of view why even ask?!!! Right now, my mind has gone blank as I try to think of stimulating, effective, motovational activities to get our reception children interested in t…
