Hi it seems i haven't been on here in ages, and now im back with questions i s hould probably know the answer to but its been one of those weeks. when it comes to qualified staff in nursery what are the guidelines on it?, does level two count as qualified.... does there have to be a qualified member of staff in each room at all times (and if so do they have to be qualified to level three?) deputy manager ~ ours is room based,do you give your deputy time out of the room to be in the office, or do you give them work to do in their room.... currently my deputy works the same job as a nursery nurse with the exception of opening and locking up nursery.... basically…

Are We Unreasonable

Just wondered others thoughts. As a response to us not being able to hold the Christmas party during open hours, the Committee and myself said we'd hire the church hall for another couple of hours and and hold the party out of hours (we are registered for 24, but have 32 on the books). We've discussed it and thought we'd ask the parents to bring in some food from their own culture (not all the party food), maybe a magician and the man in red. The parents have been asked to donate a small named wrapped pressie for their child as well as a £4.00 donation to cover the hire of the hall. The Committee said they would be happy running it as last year there was a…

I was just wondering if anyone had an example of how your setting records what cleaning has been done etc? We are a pre-school in our own timber lodge but an after school club also runs form it. The pre-school seems to be doing the majority of the cleaning such as hoovering, toilets etc and I would like to record what we do and when? Any help gratefully recieved. jenni x

hi there I have always used this site for myself working in Reception and in nurserys attached to schools, however I have an issue with my childs day nursery. He has been there for 2 months now, he still has no named coat peg, they still spell his name wrong dispite being gently corrected at the beginning of each week, he has no profile, I regulary pick him up and he has no vest on, and when I picked him up today he was wearning nothing but a nappy. I was told he had messed up his clothes but no one had actually made an attempt to dress him and it was unclear how long he had been like this. there were 4 members of staff in the room at the time so plenty of adults c…

Hi, I realise i am talking about an after school club and not an early years setting but i wonder if anybody is able to help me. I am due to take over the running of an after school club as an outisde provider. Our development worker has told us that between the school and myself we have to arrnage a transfer of control- which is fine. The problem being that we have been told because there are exisitng staff i have to honour whats in the staffs current contracts. As an individual that will be impossible pensions, sick pay etc The staff have said that they would be happy to sign a clause stating that they are happy to sign a new contract from me, but obviously…

I have a question to ask on behalf of a friend. She has just given an apprentiship to a young lad. She seems to remember hearing years ago about men in childcare having to have a cushion on their lap in order to allow a child on. I recall hearing the same thing but neither of us can remember if it was outdated rules or heresay. Has anyone heard the same or similar and if so where was it from? We both are adamant that this lad shouldnt be treated any differently and would oppose any such ruling, no parents have commented in anything other than a positive way and the children clearly love him, but her boss has never employed a male and wants facts and figures wit…

Hi, I wonder if anyone has experience/ideas for supporting children who are left handed but are emergent writers. The child finds it very difficult and also is complaining it hurts their hand. Awful as it sounds this is the first child I have ever taught who is struggling. Any ideas/tips greatly appreciated.VikkiM

Setting Sizes

Hi, We are a 65 place nursery (65 morning and 65 afternoon), some children full time (those entering reception class in Jan) and some part time. We have 5 members of staff with 13 children in each group. Our building is quite old and is split over 3 large rooms. I feel we work really hard to provide children with a good learning environment. The problem I am having is planning for individual children - for example if it was my turn in the craft room (painting, sand, water, tactile, craft etc) I can observe and record what the children do. I could also decide what these children might need to do next. The problem is that these children may not access this area ag…
