i folks... I seem to be getting all the difficult problems this week; first with dummies and now with pull ups. We a re a school nursery and take 3-4 year olds. t has always been our procedure to say no to pull ups unless there is a medical reason for the child still needing to be in them. I have read with interest the threads re pull ups but wanted to know were exactly is it written down in the discrimination act regarding this issue. I dont want to continue with this poilcy unless by law should be allowing any child in with pull ups so some clarification would be most welcome by anyone out there cheers and lets hope my next posting will be something like... what to…

I am not very loyal about where I buy paint paper etc and find it hard to compare like for like.Where do people find these resources to be of quality but not too expensive? we need to reduce out goings this term and this is one area that we can.Am i the only one that takes a sharp intake when i see a child use half a pot of sequines on one picture? On the other hand I do want to give the children what they need and dont want to be couning out sparkles!

we feed our children 3 times a day and do our best to give a good variety of foods including roasts, pasta, fresh veg etc. However some of our children do not stay for lunch and all they have from us is a snack am and pm.Up to now this might be bread stick and cream cheese, dried fruit, fruit, toast, plain biscuit, pop corn, cheese biscuit, crackers ,carrot sticks etc. As we need to cut back on out goings at the moment what do you think about us only providing fruit, toast and plain biscuits at these times and saving the variety for tea time? I hate counting the pennies but needs must.

Willow Structures

The whole of our garden is covered with the green safety matting (looks a bit like carpet). It was laid on top of a soil base, and there is one section of the garden where weeds freely grow through the matting. Do you think that it would be possible to pierce some of the matting in order to poke willow through, in order to create a willow structure?

Hi all can you help? We have a little girl coming into nursery who is extremely reluctant to give up her dummies... unfortunately in the plural The other day when she came for a visit she had one in her mouth and one in her hand. Mum said that she has a paddy when she tries to get her to give it up. Obviously I dont want to encourage dummies in nursery... personal bug bear of mine. There was a great article in Nursery World last month too which has strengthed my resolve about the harm beyond the first year of dummy use. Anyway, has anyone had experience of this? The first day is so important and just don't want her coming in thinking that the dummy is going to sta…

So during the holidays the Trustees of the hall have installed a lovely hot air hand dryer - right above the pegs where our children hang up their coats and bags, but that's another story. My initial reaction was that I didn't want the children having access to it - but couldn't find a way to switch the thing off. Luckily it isn't one of those that you just need to put your hand under to start it up, and fortunately the children haven't seemed very interested. Of course it also means that since they have provided a means of drying hands, the Trustees won't now provide paper towels as part of the rent! This is one of those issues that everyone gives you a differe…

Healthy Eating Discussions
by Guest- 10 replies

I have been manager in my nursery since May, and their last Ofsted was in 2005. One of the actions after inspection was that the children are offered healthy meals and snacks, but staff discussion about healthy eating is limited. Having come in as manager, this is still quite evidently an action. Staff do try, but after less than a minute, they run out of things to say, and they are quite obviously bored at having to struggle for what to say each time the opportunity arises. At first I was frustrated as they know this is an action, but I thought they were blatantly not bothering to do it. But as it turns out, they are finding it difficult to know what to …
