Hi i manage a small committee run preschool we are based in the country and i would like to buy a Hamster or some gold fish for the group. Does anybody else have pets in their setting if so how do the children react is there any health and safety issues apart from obviously getting the children to wash their hands after playing with the pet and also making sure there is an adult with the children when they are stroking the pet.Any views or experience on this matter would be much appreciated thanks

Biting - How Do You Deal With It?

Hi all, The week before last my toddler was bitten 3 times by the same child over the course of the week and apparently did nothing to provoke these attacks . I didn't pick him up any of these times as I was still at school however each time my partner was simply told he'd been bitten and asked to sign an accident form. Each time my child had been playing alone and the other child had come up a bitten him. The last time was on the Friday and he had a really bad bite on his chest - the skin was broken in two places and it has developed into a really nasty bruise still visible now (we have been on holiday the last week and got lots of funny looks from strangers). I am …

Hi. I came back to work part time after my maternity leave. Bit about the Nursery...it is part of a school, rather decent sized, and has 60 part time children - 30 in each session. When I came back the other teacher and I got together for a day at the beginning of each term to decide what we were doing, and do the medium term plans. The way our day is structured goes a bit like.. Come in for welcome time - register and a quick 5 -10 min carpet session. Hopefully in two family groups. C.I. time with one adult led focus activity running through the week during this time. Free flow outdoors Tidy up. Salley Phonics - in family groups Snack Outdoor play with …

Qualifications 1 2

Just spoken to a friend of mine who was asking about qualifications. Her friend, trained and achieved NNEB 25 years ago but has been told that to work with children she needs to do the NVQ3. I was always under the impression that NNEB was a level 3 qualification so it seems mad to me that she would have to re-train and re-qualify at the same level. I can understand that it might be because her qualification is 25 years old but surely there is something else she can do rather than do a whole qualification again? Or did I get the wrong end of the stick with the levels?

We are about to combine our children aged 1 year to 3 years in one large building. (At present, they are divided in different buildings) I was wondering what rooms/areas and resources that you offer children of this age as i want to make sre i am not missing anything. I have already thought that i need a room which is cosy with cushions and rugs with sensory activities and treaure baskets for the youngest children and also a learning area with table and chairs for the rising three's. In between that i need a role pay area, small world, construction, creative, large physical area and the obvious things like dining room, nappy change area and sleep room. It wou…

We had a mother at the beginning of July who told us she was going to report us to Social Services for allowing her son to get a red mark from a bump with another child. The child has alot of history behind it and let just say we have spent a fair few hours on this child and family. The father has beening coming in most weeks to spend time with his son as he only gets the odd weekend that he is allowed to see him. When mother said she was going to Soc. Serv. I asked her to come in a see us first, but she ahs a new boyfriend who is in to the "legal side" of things after his fight to see his children. so he told her to go the Legal route on the complaint. i told her that…
