Decorating

I am going to decorate one of our rooms at pre-school over the half term break. I have decided to paint one wall white and then let the children decorate it the first week back. I am going to use poster paint for the children but feel it will probably need sealing to ensure it doesn't come off. Has anybody got any ideas what I should use? Do you think varnish or watered down PVA? Thanks Linda

Bikes Outside!

Hi, Has anyone got any good ideas of how to control the amount of time which bikes can be used . I work in a very busy Foundation unit and od course the bikes are like magnets to some children. I try to be fair and remind the children to let others have a turn, but it can be quite time consuming. Is there a simpler solution out there? I would love to hear how it can be manageable. Thanks, Sunshine

Nappy Changing
by Guest- 12 replies

HI Due to needing more space in the room i have now moved the nappy changing table into the staff bathroom. There is enough room in there for it. Obviously the staff will not close, nor lock the door when changing a child (the door will be left ajar ~ so not wide open either) All staff who change children are police checked..... i have two questions though.... Firstly is it acceptable do you think to have the children's changing area in the staff bathroom? and secondly because i have moved the changing area into the bathroom both rooms (toddlers and tweenies) are sharing a changing area.(tweenies used to have one of their own, but it was far from ideal) so…

Rotas
by Guest- 8 replies

I have done the rota for the whole of April, up until 4th May - even though I am leaving on 19th April. The lady who is taking over from me is my line manager, as it has been decided that they will not advertise my post for some time. I always do at least 1 early shift and 1 late shift per week, because I feel that it is important to 'muck in' with the rest of the team; but more importantly because we would not be able to maintain ratios if I didn't. I therefore put the new manager down for the same shifts I would do - as in effect she is stepping into my shoes. She has emailed me and said that she will only be doing 9 to 5, so please alter the rota. I…

Extremley Quiet Child
by Guest- 9 replies

Hi Guys I have a child in my Rec class who is very quiet. I have noticed recently that she has become a lot less talkative. She stands and onbseves the otherchildren constantly but very rarely joins in or initiates conversation. I have been on a visit to her home to try and get her to open up. She was a different child at home and seemed to be quite a Madam! She jumped all over me and was extremely bossy to her younger brother. Meanwhile at school she is a mouse! She seems very tired and mum has trouble putting her to bed at night often finally getting her to settle at 9-9:30! Any ideas on how to bring her out of herself more in school! Thanks in advance!

Have done a forum search and found a few posts from while back. Please can anyone tell me: 1. Does anyone have any more storage ideas. I know that the heads arn't meant to be able to touch. Can anyone point me in the direction of any web-sites with good storage resources on? 2. At what ages should children be having access to a toothbrush from? We have children aged 3 months to 5 years. Thanks

Nappy Changing And Emotional Needs
by Guest- 5 replies

am interested in others views on childrens emotional needs during nappy changing. is this part of the day ever really thought about or is it seen as a 'job to be done?' if a child protests is the nappy changed anyway or do you employ another type of strategy? and how do you approach the child to be changed? is it down to one person during the session or the keyperson? am interested in children who are aged between 2 and a half to four years. researching into this as part of my Ba at Roehampton University so would welcome all your thoughts on this. thanks.

Hi, Ive got a 3 yrs old with delayed language who is dry for most of the day in nappies, and is happy to be in underpants, and to sit on the toilet, but will not have a wee at all. We have been trying with parental support for a few weeks now, but he just will not do anything on the toilet at all. We have made the area specially appealing to him, and he likes this, but will still hold it in, and has requested his nappy on one occassion, with legs crossed. We are sure he is ready, and can obviously hold it in for long periods, but am concerned if he doent learn to let it out soon he will develop problems, or a fear of going to the toilet. We have also…

What's In Your Junk Modeling Box?
by Guest- 12 replies

Hi all, as well as my staff members tutor kicking off my debate regarding parent help at snack i have more...... According to the tutor junk modeling stuff can not contain any food packages, washing up bottles, egg boxes can be used if you can PROVE that you have microwaved them!!! Egg boxes we do not use any way but the food packages we do, empty cereal packets, youghut pots and so on. The reason given was in case of an allergy eg food allergy, ok so should a child attend with a known food allergy or any allergy then you would not use products which trigger it off and you would adapt your setting.... This answer was wrong ...what if the child's family member has …
