We're reading Handa's Surprise next week, and doing lots of 'food' activities. Want to bring in PHSE and was wondering if anyone knows of any other story books about Africa that we could share. Also, would like to get children to find out about Africa so need some child friendly websites if anyone has any ideas Harricroft x

Enco

How many of you have an ENCO in your settings? (Equalities Named Coordinator). In my last authority this was highly recommended, and training was being rolled out. Is it a requirement or just a recommendation? If anyone has one in their setting, what does their role consist of? It could be quite an exciting one, but seems a bit airy fairy at the moment.

In our last OFSTED inspection we were told to "increase the range of resources which reflect positive images of disability". I am not sure how to go about this without making it look very contrived! Please could you let me know how you promote this in your settings? I know there are dolls and books available (at a cost), but I'm not sure how to incorporate these successfully. Thanks for any help!

Toilet Training Advice Needed
by Guest- 6 replies
- 1.7k views
Having had a quick look through previous topics and not found what I need I would appreciate any advice. We are a school nursery and so take children aged 3-4. We have successfully supported several children with toilet training since the rules changed but have come across a challenge. We currently have two children who just won't go anywhere near a toilet. A little girl who's mum tells us uses the toilet happily at home but won't go anywhere near ours (we have also tried having her potty in nursery). And a little boy who won't go near the toilet at home either. Both children can also be reluctant to be changed when needed. Any thoughts on how to approach …

End Of The Day
by Guest- 6 replies

Are any of you from nurseries who open until 6pm, and whose staff have to clean after the children have gone? My staff are paid until 6:15, and cannot get the tasks they need to get done, in this amount of time. It is starting to become quite stressful for them. Before I started, the children were all shoved together (regardless of age) at 5pm or earlier, and generally left with 1 member of staff whilst the others focused on cleaning. When I arrived, we changed it so that we put the children's needs first (funny that!), and did the cleaning after they had gone. I want to gain a balance. I make sure that I put myself on the late shift every week, so I do …

Hi, not posted anything on here before so hope I ve done it right! I teach in an Early Years Unit with Reception and Nursery. This is my third school teaching in FS and things are quite different. At present we are setting up an activity in each of the areas of the room and the children are to only do this in each of the areas for the whole week! We have a wealth of resources on the shelves in each area but are not allowing the children to take anything off or to add to the activity with any of them. Im finding this different as in my past schools we have encouraged the children to use the resources to develop activities of their own or to enhance the activities in the …

Care After Operation
by Guest- 2 replies

Morning all We have a child whom has had an operation 'down below' and needs to be watched closely from Monday onwards for the following 6 weeks and then will be in similar situation in a few months time when they will have another operation. The child can't climb, straddle equipment, run about, etc etc. Mum is happy for him to come to pre-school and we are very happy to have him back. But how would you approach the situation? Would his keyworker keep a closer eye on him than normal or would you get in another member of staff? If so, is there funding available for this sort of short time physical need? Many thanks everyone. You are all great for the …

Slap Cheek Help Please
by Guest- 7 replies
- 3.3k views
Hi all We currently have a few children who appear to have slap cheek at the moment. We have looked in our yellow child health folder and have made our parents aware as we have quite a few pregnant mums at the mo! The question I am asking is whether anyone knows if you can catch slap cheek twice? One of our mums has said that you can't. And as her daughter has already had slap cheek that she hasn't got it again. Although she clearly appears to have. Even the child said 'I had slap cheek yesterday!'. If it was any other child we may assume that their perception of time is not good, but not this child, she is sharp as a knife. I am sure some of your …
