During one visit to a nursery quite a while back I saw a genius idea for a welly rack! It was a long plank of wood with lots small of broom handle type sticks coming out at an angle for the children to put their wellies on. I've been trying to describe this invention to my caretaker (hoping he'll make me one!!) but to no avail, I attempted a drawing but that confused him even more...men eh!...anyway I just wondered if anybody uses such a thing in their setting and had any photos available. Thanks Catherine xxx

Eating Sand!

I have a young fellow that eats the sand by the spoonful every time the sand tray is out. He makes no faces, flinches or anything, just happily munches away. I have repeatedly said no, pulled the face etc! (He is 19 months) I understand that he is exploring and still in the stage of using his mouth to try new things etc I even caught him picking up and eating dried mud that had fallen out of the children's wellies when they came inside from the garden! Also are there any health implications of this continued diet of sand? How does it digest etc?

Left/ Right Hand Prefernce

I am sure I should know this but... we have a four year old boy who has not yet shown a clear preference for his right/left hand when holding a pencil etc. He enjoys role play activites and does not visit the office area by choice. I have spoken to his mother to see if she has noticed a preference - she hasn't particulalry but like us feels he probably goes for the right. She says his father is able to use either hand for many activities. Any information/advice would be welcome. I don't want to encourage J to use a hand that is not going to be the 'correct' one for him. Thank you in advnce ! Rose

Sending Children Home Ill

In private nurseries are you unable to send children home ill?? My son is 18 months old (I teach full time in a Reception class) and there is a child in his room at nursery who seems to be always ill. I picked Jonah up tonight and all the staff were complaining about this child (as they usually are) as she had been difficult and ill all day. I asked what was wrong with her and was told she had an ear infection and that there was gunge actually coming out of her ear! They said they had tried to ring the mother (once) today but had no answer. Can't believe her mum actually sent her in like that and if she had no other choice she could've easily made sure she had her ph…

Hi there all we have an indoor climbing frame (old and used) but still plenty of milage in it. I think it is a Galt one. 'House' climing box, ladder stretching across to A frame on which is a slide. Open to anyone but we are in Birmingham so purchaser must collect. We are asking for a £50 donation towards our allotment project... what a bargain if anyone is interested I would be happy to relay our details. I will try and get a photo tomorrow hoping it can be of some use to someone cheers Apple

Written Information On Children
by Guest- 5 replies

Please could you let me know how you give your parents access to written information on their child, such as observations, developmental information, achievements, etc? We are looking at placing our keyworker files somewhere so that parents can come and look at them whenever they wish. I am certain that parents would never wish to look at another child's, but in theory, if we did this then they could pick up another child's and look inside, which would breach standard 12.5. I have contacted Ofsted about this twice, but have had waffly answers both times.

Well, I have left my next presentation right until the last minute... but then again, I have been away over the weekend celebrating my birthday ! Basically I need to write a presentation based on one outside agency/external professional that comes into the setting to support either staff, children or both. Trouble is, I don't know who to write about and it is due in tomorrow . Other than the Sensory Support Team, we don't really get any outside agencies coming in. I haven't managed to get in touch with the woman from SST so I don't really know what her role is. Obviously it is to support the child with the visual impairment, but I don't know what she does wh…
