Disaster Unfolding At Nursery
by Guest- 11 replies

Hi well after four days off i return to chaos! (curse the deputy and senior ) I walk into work and 'sense' an atmosphere. Bitching has been rife, coming from my deputy and senior, seems they have spent time rubbing others up the wrong way! and doing a whole lot of nothing else. before i went off on annual leave i had moved my deputy from baby room to pre-school room, basically because she was not pulling her weight in babies, she did meet their care needs and they were in no means neglected but she did not do the displays, the room looked dismal and bless the other member of staff that was in there with her, she worked so hard to try and develop the room bu…

What Do You During Your Circle Time?

Hi. I have been watching and leading circle time now at my place for 4 weeks and I feel as an adult, that it is boring and lacks any kind of direction. We tend to do the same activities each time, role play stories, puppets, reading stories. We don't tend to have any kind of discussion at these times. It is very much adult led with little imput from the children. Basically, we do the register (which I thought we weren't supposed to do in pre-school??) and then we select 2 children, one to count the girls and one to count the boys, the children are then asked to determine whether there are more boys/girls. We then go through the calendar, and absically tell the…

Food Labels

Does anyone know where you can buy those labels you stick on foods when you open them, to say what date they were opened? I know you can use blank labels, but I've seen some circular ones with the day on, and there's a space where you just write the date.

Purpose Built Pre-school Project
by Guest LucyQ- 6 replies

We may soon be faced with the prospect of building a purpose built pre-school (we currently run out of a parish hall). It is very exciting and of course we are a long way off but I'm already thinking about the building and outside area itself and how we want it to be. Has anyone been in this position ? What kind of building did you get? We want something special - a real child/family friendly centre, not just a prefab (although if we can't raise enough money then we would be happy with that too, anythings better than what we have now). How did you get the funding? Are there any innovative architects that specifically work with schools/pre-schools ? …

HI following our good ofsted report i want to thank the staff, but haven't got a fortune to spend on them.... i only manage the nursery (and don't own it).. was rather hoping the directors were going to think of a way to thank staff but that isn't happening.... so obviously i want to thank them, and naturally i have verbally done so, and we are going for a meal next week (which we will all pay for ourselves at) but i wanted a gesture or soemthing as well.... any ideas? Uurghhh! It's Back Again!
by Guest- 6 replies

The dreaded sickness and diarrhoea bug is back! Yesterday within seconds of each other, 3 pre-schoolers gave the carpet a nice multi-colour look!, over night there have been more. Had lot's of dodgy nappies over the past week too. Funny thing is it seems to be really quick, one minute they are fine, then throwing up, next they are ravenous! Parents have reported the children being starving hungry and eating lot's. Fingers crossed, I have a party at the weekend I don't want to miss.

Staff Shortages
by Guest- 4 replies

It really makes a difference when you have a decent number of staff on doesn't it? This week has been one big struggle due to staff sickness, etc. Everyone is feeling stressed, and feeling that the quality of childcare we have offered hasn't been the best. I've just been out and bought everyone flowers as a little "thanks". Any tried and tested tactics when ratios are being pushed to the limit?

Pointless Activities?
by Guest- 8 replies
- 2.2k views
I have been at work for the last few weeks and to be honest I have seen some planning and activities taking place that I feel are totally pointless. There is no given reason why we are doing some of these things, no adult interaction/support, and most of them are way beyond the children's understanding and abilities in my opinion. In addition to this, all the under 3's are expected to participate in the activities aimed and designed for the FS children, and they are told off or shouted at when they are unable to follow the instructions that the adult is giving. I have tried to say that we should be considering the age/stage differences, but my protests are falling on …

Ok, I had a parent telephone me last week to say he was moving his child to another group.Nothing wrong with ours, he assured me, just the other one was cheaper and he couldn't see any difference, so he thought he'd save the money.Fair enough, I suppose, it's his right, even though they had only recently moved to the area and the child was settling nicely. So, I sent a bill for the month, including his notice period(which he hadn't given me), and today I had a phone call from him, virtually foaming at the mouth, telling me he had "issues" with me, it wasn't fair to charge him and I hadn't told him there was a notice period. So, I explained it was usual to ask for one mont…
