well first staff meeting as manager, and it went well All staff listened, looked semi~interested and did not fall asleep lol. In fact i have effected some changes in the planning (which the director approves of) and makes our lives a whole lot easier ~ staff certanly liked the new planning format Afew house keeping issues were addressed and again staff were okay with these.... it kind of felt very surreal to be sat there chairing the meeting.... kind of feels like it shouldn't have been me..... i have had a fab day... the director came in and saw the building is still standing lol, so all seems good..... Team Event

The nursery consists of 9 staff: Myself; 2 staff in the baby room; 3 staff in the 2 to 3's; 3 staff in 3 to 5's. There have been a few new staff over the last 10 months, and some staff movement around the nursery. There have also been some changes to practice which the "this-is-the-way-we've-always-done-things" staff haven't coped well with. The changes have been very positive, and for the good of the children - as all changes should be, but have caused some staff to grumble between themselves about what might change next. Hence the staff have retreated to the comfort of the team within their room, and the whole team are feeling quite divided. I am…

HI on wednesday i need to do a staff meeting on ofsted and what may be expected from an inspection (we know we will have one soon as i have recently been apointed manager and i believe they visit settings that have such a big staff change)... anyway.. for my interview i did an ofsted presentation and it covered the national standards, what the inspector would be looking for and the SEF. all very relevant but i don't want to just sit and preach at the staff i want to make it interetsing (if possible) and also want to try and gain staff's understanding of ofsted as well. so how do i make sure the staff are informed of what to expect without boring them to tears? …

I have been reading about peer observations, and am keen to put these into practice as a tool for bringing about change. Does anyone have a particularly good method or format that you use for staff to reflect on their own practice?

Aside from the usual children's pictures and photocopies of bits and bobs, does anyone have anything inspiring or useful on their office wall? Am finally getting round to clearing away all the stuff left over by the last manager, and making it my own - can't wait!

Another Toilet Traning Question!
by Guest- 6 replies

Hello. My friend is thinking of putting her son (2.7 years) into a local pre-school, as she has a young baby and feels that her son would benefit from mixing with other similar aged children before he goes to school. She is concerned however that he is not toilet trained, and has heard from another parent of the pre-school that children who are not toilet trained will not be admitted. I was wondering if this was right as I'm sure I've read elsewhere on here that children can not be denied access to provision on the basis that they are not toilet trained. If I didn't read it here, it is possible that I could have dreamed this! Are the per-school owners wit…

An incident occurred recently where a father of one of our children approached a mother of another child. He grabbed her arm and told her that her son had hit his daughter. (This had happened the day before) The mother went mad, swearing in front of the children using the 'f' word, then saying she will get him arrested for assault and etc. I asked them both to step outside the room so the children could not see the commotion. I spoke to both parents; to the father, infront of the annoyed mother, I explained that he should not approach the mother in this way and should speak to the staff if he has a problem. The mother was calling him names that I would not lik…

Babies

Having gained a much better grasp of what does (or doesn't) take place with the different age groups in the nursery, I have 2 questions: 1. What activities do you do to promote gross motor skills in the under 2's? The staff in the baby room seem to be doing next to nothing to promote this area. They have children of very different stages, from not yet able to sit up, to being able to run around. Do you have any simple or inspiring ideas? We are getting some sport's instructors in to demonstrate activities to do with the 2 to 5s. What direction can I give to the staff who work with the under 2's? 2. How often do you take your bab…

One day down, one to go! They arrived this morning, one lady with briefcase and surprisingly human!! Had a lovely session today and she's back tomorrow, suprising how calm we all feel, I think we're relieved that their here at last!! Will let you all know how we do. Just got to keep those 'end of term outgrown nursery children' captivated!
