Nursery Project

Hi, I'm new to this site and not currently involved in an existing nursery. I am also not a qualfieid nursery teacher. I am however looking to set up a private preschool / day nursery for children aged 3-5 (between 50-70 children - full time) and I want to make it fantastic. I have the advantage that I own a proprty that is in need of complete refurbishment and this is where I would set up the business (nursery). I plan to refurbish it to a high specification, focusing on both the educational and play requirements of 3-5 year olds. I am looking to employ nursery nurses and also qualified foundation stage teachers. What I would really like from this forum is comments a…

Outside - Taking Turns On Bikes
by Guest- 7 replies

Hi, I'm looking for help with your ideas and experience again please. I was outside on my own with a large proportion of the 52 children in the session. Some more of of the staff could have moved out to be with the children, however it gave me the opportunity to see the children arguing about having turns on the bikes. I'm thinking of making number plates and a sign for a vehicle rental service. When using number plates how many letters and numbers would you use? I thought one letter and three numbers and refer to the letters by name rather than the sound they make. Do you think it would help to hold up and call out a registration number when it was time for a chan…

Wasn't quite sure where to post this - hope it is ok here!!?? We have just been given some giant african land snails (about 1 year old) Was wondering if any of you have them in your setting and if you can give me any pointers. Particularly interested to know what happens over the weekend. Can they survive comfortably over that time or do they get taken home and if so, by whom??? What do the eggs look like? Could they easily be missed? What do I do if I do find lots and lots and lots of eggs??!! All advice and information gratefully received. Many thanks in advance

Nappy Changing

Hi Can anyone clarify requirements regarding changing facilities. Due to lack of space, is it acceptable to place a changing mat on the floor of a large toilet cubicle (sole use of children) to change children's nappies? Management feel it is safer to change in this way rather than on a raised surface, is less stress on staffs backs, and as long as the toilet floor is clean (which it must always be!) it is hygienic. My argument is just that I would never have chosen to change my own children's nappies by laying their changing mat on a toilet floor and so personally would prefer an 'off the floor surface'. Am I wrong and it is acceptable/good practice or not. …

Hi, I hope everyone is well. I've been away from the forum for a while as I've been so busy in my 2 new jobs. In my temporary nursery job I'm helping with ideas to improve speaking and listening in nursery. The staff have been great and have taken on board pre-reading skills ideas which fit in with the school development plan for improving children's reading comprehension skills. I want to know if you fit in anything like finishing tidying, washing cupsand plates in during time nursery sessions. At my nursery it does happen and I want to discuss this with everyone. In a school nursery I think that the children are entitled to all our time considering th…

Job Interview

Hi All. Just to let you know that I have just received a phone call to a job I applied for yesterday. I've been shortlisted and have an interview next week. Very excited! The pre-school has been standing across the road from me for as long as I can remember (well since I was about 2 because I used to go there when I was little!!). The distance thing is great, the hours are even better! It's only open for about 6 hours a day, but I have applied for part time which means, I would think, a couple of hours each day or one or two days rather than the whole lot. At least I'll now be able to go off and do my foundation degree now! Have a very good feeling about it. WIll …

Staff Meetings
by Guest- 18 replies

I am the new manager in a nursery, and currently we have staff meetings once a month, at the end of the day. As the nursery has been without a manager for a while, I am finding that there are a lot of changes that need to take place soon. Several of the changes affect the whole nursery and all of the staff, and I am finding that I don't want to wait for the next staff meeting to come up to address the next issue. However, due to staff ratios, etc, there is no other way to get all the staff together at any other time. How often do whole staff meetings occur within your settings? Do you have other times in between meetings when whole group issues can be addressed…

When Is A Complaint, A Complaint?!
by Guest- 6 replies

What do Ofsted class as a complaint? I know that we have to keep a record of complaints, and that all parents have access to it, and I know that we have to use the format provided by Ofsted, even if the complaint is dealt with internally, and it doesn't go as far as Ofsted. What I'm not clear on is what is classed as a complaint? E.g. 1. Today a child got biten and the staff dealt with it in the correct manner, and informed the parent as soon as she collected her child. They got her to sign the correct form to say that she knew about it. Having gone out to the car and had a good gossip with another parent, she came storming back and demanded to see me, …
