Outdoor Dilemma!
by Guest- 8 replies

My nursery is situated in the middle of a park area. We have our own garden, which is fenced off by tall blue bars, allowing the children to see out into the park. The nursery is based in a disadvantaged area. If any equipment is left out in the garden at night, it is not there in the morning, therefore, all outdoor equipment has to be brought in at the end of the day, and left in 2 rooms, as there is no-where else to store it. We really need to develop our physical activity, as at the moment it is just a bit of a free-for-all, with little staff interaction. I am going to be asking my staff to start producing a resource box for outdoor games and activities…

Printing With Real Fish!
by Guest- 7 replies

Just wanted to know if any of you adventurous people have done paint printing using real fish. I've seen the results of such an activity displayed in a nursery (years ago) and wanted to do it as part of our 'animal' topic. What I wondered was whether anyone had any tips. You know the sort of thing: 'you need plenty of paint' or 'use the paint sparingly' etc. Is there any particular sort of paint that works well (I was planning on using good old poster paints)?

Themed Activities

Hello, I'm a teacher in a school nursery and I've just been observed and told that all my activities should be linked or 'themed' to a topic. Apparently pretty much everything I set out for the day should be tied in with the topic (minibeasts this half term) because, I was told, this allows for 'layers of learning'. However, I think it's pretty much impossible to theme everything, everyday and I also think that it makes for a pretty topid learning environment especially when a topic lasts for a half term - sometimes up to 7 weeks long!!!! I'd really appreciate some feedback on what everyone else does - I have to face the head on monday with some arguments as to…

Sun Cream
by Guest- 11 replies

Hi fellow forumites Day Nursery with 50 children on premises from the age of 2 - 4 years. Another issue has arisen. Sent a note out to parents saying: If their child only attends half day (am or pm) could they please put sun cream on before they arrive. Sent consent forms to parents where the child stays all day requesting: Sun cream to be supplied to the nursery as we need to apply this at lunch time. I thought - quite straight forward. We have children arriving without protection - even though we have said they may not be able to go outside, and parents saying that they have put the suncream on and that it will last all day! We use to have our own …

Team Work

Hi I had my appraisal today, and my manager has asked if i cold work alongside here in thinking up ideas to promote team work amungst all staff. We have a staff team of 12 people, made up of mangaer, deputy, senior officer and then staff who are all mostly training to NVQ 3. The manager wants us to try and gel better as a team... any ideas on how to do this. Right now what seems to be happening is the staff in toddler room (5 staff) work well together, but rather seperatly to the tweenie room, and pre-school room. The baby room staff (2 staff) work well with toddler room, but again not with any other room. The tweenie staff (2 staff) stick to themselves and i…

HI we have students come to our nursery either from school or from college, some come one day a week for several weeks, others do two week blocks. the ages vary, but normally 15 upwards. Some of these students have never had any experience of being around children, others have vast experiences. Some are highly self motivated others are shy and a lot quieter. How can we make them all feel included and part of the team. some suggestions have been to do a placement handbook for the students, telling them a bit about the nursery etc. someone suggested adding the student to the planning so they have an identified role in the day. _ any other ideas to make the…

Hi. Feeling frazzled and knew just where to come to ask for some help! We are a sessional pre-school which, until last week, had Foundation Stage children for 5 morning sessions and then had just the BTTM (2 - 3's only) for 2 afternoon sessions per week. Sadly, PM's were no longer viable & we had no alternative but to close the session and let the 2 - 3's join our morning sessions (initially for 2 am's only). That's fine - everyone was very willing and happy to accept the change. We, the staff that is, are feeling the strain though! We decided on a trial period til half term when we would just make a few changes to our routine, observe carefully, & suppo…
