Carpet Time With Nursery

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice about how they organise their carpet time for Nursery. I have never taught Nursery before but will be teaching in a foundation unit in September. How long do they stay on the carpet for? What kinds of things do you include in these sessions? Do you make sure that carpet activities cover all the areas of learning each week? Thank you to anyone who shares their ideas.

Observations

Can anyone advise: I am in a nursery with 2-3 yr olds, I am nearly finished with NVQ3 and my assessor has been a wonderful support and fountain of knowledge, our observations at the setting are done by means of key worker system and we all aim to make observations, comments on development, relate development to FS and BTTM in these records weekly, if not more (if their is a significant incident). Our manager (who trained a long time ago and is reluctant to change), thinks our observations are too detailed and we are making too much work, but as we understand it, with the advice from my assessor (local EY co-ordinator), that is what is required by Ofsted, we are making no…

Just a simple thing - but can I find it!! The national standards say: 'Calculations of available indoor space are based on the gross area of the rooms used by children'. Where are the 'calculations'? Can any one help - our physical area has changed due to new storage units and for my peace of mind I would like to know if this alters are numbers. The children are 2 - 4 years old. THANK YOU in advance.....

Displays

I work in a session pre-school based in a community centre. At present we are unable to create displays of children's work, as all equipment has to be put away at the end of the session, including anything we stick on the walls, such as area labels. I have always enjoyed creating displays with the children and as much as I would like to show their 'work' off, I have really got nowhere to put it. I have considered sticking up things on the walls, but I think it'll be too time consuming each day, putting it all up and then taking it all back down again. There is also the risk of ruining children's work if this happens. I was wondering how others in similar situati…

Hi Before we discuss this at our next staff meeting so that we all have the same approach, thought I would ask you all how you handle the situation. Generally we encourage children to put their toys/treasures from home in the showing box to keep them safe and enable children to explore what we have on offer. We have 3 boys who bring in their power rangers to play with together during the session. On the one hand it's great that they have a shared interest, are playing well together and they use the power rangers to enact scenarios. On the other hand they are not exploring what we have to offer, they don't want to share their toys when other children becom…

I work in a pre-school in Kent. We do a basic report for our non-funded children in the summer term. We do a more indepth report for our funded children in the Autumn and Spring term and then complete the record of transfer in the summer term. All of our reports are similar to the Kent record of transfer i.e. the six early learning areas. These take a lot of time to complete and I am questioning whether we really need to do reports as often. We hold parent consultations every term and whilst the majority of parents do attend these they might be with us for 5 mins! Is it acceptable to complete one report at the end of the year combined with a parent consultation. We ha…

Hi. There's been a few posts recently about children going off to primary school and i was just wondering when was the time they went? I know there are certain times when parents have to start applying for school places and I just wondered when these were? Also what role does the pre-school/nursery play in children's transition from early years setting to school?

Student Handbooks
by Guest- 23 replies

I have decided to write a student handbook, aimed at long term students on specific childcare courses, right through to those on 2 week work experience placements, giving them information about the setting, what we do and their roles and responsibilities. I'm also aiming to include copies of paperwork, relevant for student's courses, for example policies and procedures. Was just wondering if anyone else had attempted to make one and if so, what information was included? Also, for any students that might see this post, I would be interested in any ideas you might have as to how I could make this book work to the advantage of students. Thanks Clare
