Apathy Reigns!

Apologies in advance for the rant but I must get it off my chest. A couple of months ago I was asked if I would like to host a 'VirginVie' party to raise money for the playgroup. I asked people what they thought and they all said 'What a good idea'. So muggins plus daughter went ahead and booked said party for 17th Jan. 2006. All parentsand staff got an invite as did school staff and friends and neighbours. I had to get permission from the school governors which took ages. Anyway I spent all of yesterday preparing nibbles, bought wine, juice, raffle prizes and duly met the Virgin consultant at the playgroup. Everything set up, 7.30 came and went no guests. Finally my da…

Children's Food Past Sell-by Date

This is a problem I've not encountered before. We're open for full daycare, and the arrangement is that children bring in packed lunches. We give guidance on what might be suitable, safe storage etc. Today a new child had a 'Heinz Mum's Own' casserole which we were asked to microwave at lunch time as per the instructions on the packing. When we came to do so, we noticed that it was out of date in September. At that point I made a telephone call to see if Mum was happy for me to give it to the child as I didn't want the responsiblity, frankly, and I don't yet know them very well. Mum telephoned back saying it would be fine. Do you think I now need to add this sort…

We have a 3 year old in our setting whose behaviour is getting worse instead of better. He has been with us since he was 2.6.mths. His nan or mum stayed with him when he first came for a few weeks. He was so disruptive then and investigated all our cupboards, climbed on the stage etc. etc. His mum and nan were oblivious to his behaviour and sat there reading all the travel brochures in our role-play area. I found it rather embarassing because I was constantly telling him off. Not that they minded because they said he was ours now and had to learn to behave. Not wanting to offend them I explained to them that he seemed settled now so neither had to stay with him. He was …

Performance Management Targets.
by Guest- 7 replies

Hi everyone, hoping you can help, please? My team leader for performance management came to see me today to set new targets. She has asked if one of them can have something to do with spelling - apparently it's part of a whole school approach (to do with the school self evaluation form ). She wanted them there and then but being the nursery teacher made it a little difficult to come up with an idea staight away. So I was thinking along the lines of hearing different sounds and linking them to letters, maybe connected with initial letters of their names..... I don't really know how I can word it or how it can be measured, but I haven't got any other ideas. …

Nursery Structure/timetable
by Guest- 16 replies

Hello, I am a Foundation Stage leader and Nursery teacher (for the first time) in a Nursery attached to a school. In September, I took over from another teacher and have so far stuck to her "timetable". I am concerned that it is too structured and would like to know how other people shape their Nursery sessions. At the moment the sessions are 2 and a half hours each in the morning and afternoon. The children come in and play for about an hour and have the option to join in with an adult led activity. After about an hour, we have a carpet time or group time. Then we have snack time and children have outside play. I'd like some advice about snack time.…

Builders Trays/tough Spots

Builders Trays/Tough Spots OUTDOOR PLAY. In a nursery setting, we use builders trays/tough spots on table tops, on wooden bricks, on playmats etc. for small world and construction play. Does anyone know of a supplier who produces a metal frame or stand for a builders tray (similar to those used for sand and water trays) so that tables can be freed up for other activities and the tray can be raised off the ground in damp weather? I've looked in several catalogues - but no luck so far. Thank you.

Many weeks ago a received a letter in a very official looking envelope with the pre-school name on but with my home address. They were asking me to confirm the details. Today I received a reminder that I haven't done it. Apparantly they need to categorise my business correctly so that I can be found on-line by millions of users!!!

Lovely, Sweet Children!

I just wanted to let everyone know that we did our nativity today in the nursery & it went very well! I was disappointed to discover that at my infant school, the Y2s do all the work for the school production & all other years - including the nursery - sing. I decided to be brave & the result was that we had our own mini show (well 2 shows as we had a.m. & p.m) today. I wrote out a simple version of the nativity, found appropriate places for appropriate songs & taught them to the children. I'm not saying it was well-polished of anything, but in a way that was the beauty of it: the children practised the songs enough that NN & I weren't singing al…

Young Child Problem
by Guest- 9 replies

Hi all, Bit of background - small pre school, 2-5yrs, all children work together. I have the most adorable, boy who started my setting in sept (Child 1). When he began he was 2yrs 3mnths. As with all my 2-3 yrs I have a staffing ratio of 1:2 sometimes 1:3. Over the past few weeks I have had 4 parents coming upto me saying that there child didn't want to come in because of this boy. One said that he hit him on the mat, another said he stands on his fingers one said he was scared of him. I did explain to the parents the very low ratios we have and out of the 6 sessions, only 2 of them he is 1:3, 2 a 1:2 the others he is 1:1. The only problem with this little boy is…
