Equipment Buying

I am looking through the Hope and Galt Catalogues to buy home corner/role play equipment. Has anyone had experience with the new play panels they are doing as an alternative to the traditional playhouse with opening door and windows ? The panels look so bright and colourful but my concern is whether they are as sturdy - they are connected together by removable connectors at the top and bottom of each panel and we would have to put the house away at the end of the session. This is a large amount for us to spend out in one go so I don't want to make the wrong decision. Can anyone help ?? M

he Blue here I have just moved back from from working in a FS1 and FS2 abroad. Luckily there was abrill earlyy years team and the setting were developed with all the areas etc and planning and using the profile. I have found a job in a day nursey which was ashock with pay and conditions and the really long hours but as the children and staff are nice i have decied to give it a go . But i feel asbit like an alien as the Pre school room not to be called FS1 has no area definition, no structure, no adult led time, circle time and so on. Planning i am unsure about. The girls ask about my previous life and i have discussed the early years set up but they just say th…

Joining In

We have a little girl in our group who is 3, she does not join in with any type of physical play whatsoever, inside or outside. It doesn't matter whether its dancing, using the climbing frame, slide etc or playing ball, hoops etc she flatly refuses to even try - she just stands about observing despite all the encouragement from staff to join or have a try. When outside she spends her time picking up stones or acorns and putting them in her pocket to take home. When inside she just stands when others are moving around her. Her favourite activity is glueing and sticking and will spend most of the morning there if left and not attempt to try other activities for hersel…

HELLO, i have plucked up the courage to introduce myself and say hello , but please bear with me if I get it wrong. any way I just wanted to share with everyone we have started somerset total communication sign language within our pre-school and the children are picking it up very quickly, considering the staff were not to keen to start with and worried about showing the children it has gone brilliantly. If anyone else has the chance to learn it I would encourage them todo so.

I have just read an article about private nurseries, and voluntary providers with six or more children in receipt of the nursery education grant being eligible for ELC credit. This amounts to £ 10 per child and private nurseries are claiming that they haven't been made aware that they are eligible. What is the nursery education grant ? and has anyone been given such credit. More information was on www.curriculumonline.gov.uk but i didnt find any answers !!

New Boy
by Guest- 25 replies

Well, we have had a new little boy start Nursery last week. He attended a couple of play and stay sessions with Dad in the previous weeks, but he came to our afternoon nursery last Thurs for the first time. He is chinese and speaks no English. Dad doesn't speak much english either. Anyway, Dad bent down and told him something and the boy got up and went into the outdoor classroom. Dad then said bye to us and left. When little boy came back into Nursery he flipped out. I have never seen a child so upset. He was screaming at the top of his voice and kicking the door, we tried all the usual comforting techniques, distractions, puppets, leaving for 2 minutes and then coming b…

can anyone help with some ideas or inspiration on our book corner. it is a corner of the room with two tired dark blue sofa cushions and a Galt red bus to hold books. it is not appealing at all and the children dont use it except to jump on the cushions. If a staff member sits there they will join her but otherwise they ignore it, (not a surprise) what do you have in your book corners chairs or cushions? as i was thinking of a small table and a few plastic chairs. can anyone help me?

Conkers
by Guest- 12 replies

We were thinking of capitalising on the abundance of conkers to use them for some activities in pre-school, but my boss thinks she read somewhere that they can be poisonous. She can't remember where, when or what part is supposed to be poisonous, but I thought you clever people would certainly know the answer! I did a quick search on 'conkers' on the forum and it appears that several of you use them in lots of fantastic activities, and I can't imagine that you would be doing this if they were poisonous! But if anyone has any accurate information about the safety (or otherwise) of conkers, I'd be grateful to hear it! Many thanks Maz

Home Corner

Hi, When I last had my own class (FS) 5 yrs ago we had a home corner but changed it every half term into a different role play area eg dentist, clinic, vet etc whatever was of interest or topic. Now I am being given the impression that the home corner should stay permanently as a house in order to offer continuity to the children (nursery) throughout the year and should just be changed into different rooms. Any other role play should be an 'extra' to, and not in place of, the house. Is this the general view? I don't really have room for another role play area (apart from small role play on the carpet eg Whatever next box and contents) and I like to really go …
