I feel so upset for the children whose parents can't attend end of term celebrations. We always notify parents of end of term activities at the beginning of term by giving out news letters and displaying the notice on our board but 2 children were upset that their parents were uable to attend. One forgot and insisted it was taking place on Friday and the other one just collected their child making no comment !!!!!!!

Registers

We usually buy our register from the PLA, but the format of the most recent version isn`t that good for our pre-school setting (we will probably need a new register each term, which obviously isn`t ideal). Does anyone know who else sells registers?

No Mow Grass

Has anyone laid an artifical lawn at their setting such as "no-mow grass"? http://www.luckylizard.co.uk/index.htm We have a very muddy bare patch of grass in our garden at the moment . We are looking for suitable surfaces to suggest to the church centre manager as a more hard-wearing alternative. This looks great but I'd like to hear from anyone who has already installed it. Is it expensive? Is it as hardwearing as it looks? Does it provide a soft landing for trips and falls? Are there any problems with it? Thanks Carolyn

Help Needed With Phonics

Help! We hit on a problem this week when clapping children's names using syllables. Normally I don't have a problem but I had one child, lets say he's called 'Joel'. I would do one clap for this but several children in the room instinctively used 2 - Jo-el. Is there a right or a wrong way. Clearly there are regional variations too. I have come across this before with another child and would love to know what you would do.

Hi folks! I'm wanting to do some pasta/rice collage with my little darlings but would like to make it more interesting by dying the pasta and rice. Someone once told me how to do this, but having never gone through the process, my brain has filed the info in the archives - never to be seen again. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Picking brains here.... Essentially, we are a small village pre-school feeding to two primary schools in adjacent villages (we have no primary school in the village). Each of the primaries that we feed to has a local pre-school. This setting is finding, increasingly, that parents are choosing to use these two other pre-schools (both, incidentally, offer age-dedicated sessions, e.g. sessions dedicated to children in their final pre-school year that exclude younger children; one of these also offers sessions dedicated only to younger children). The Committee and the setting's adminstrator called a meeting last week (involving all staff and a few committee mem…

Does anyone have a list of the responsibilities of a pre-school health and safety officer or maybe a job description? Obviously, risk assessments and health and safety policies but what else, please?? Any response greatly appreciated!!

Hi there, all you lovely people!!! My setting has just (literally. by the scruff of a Friday night neck!!!) decided to join the 'First Steps' funding initiative, whereby Music Practitioners join us, on the Ground Floor, to give our children a flying start with music. We need to submit an application - we have our own ideas, lots of them, but has anyone out there had this sort of experience of applying for funding, to give us some pointers ? Sue

I need help with a bit of a brainstorm on easy ways to raise funds for our nursery. We're part of an infant school, but I really want this to be our little thing (so we can use all the money). The possible problems are as follows: 1. Deprived catchment, so not loads of spare cash from parents; 2. A caretaker who is set in his ways and locks the gates to the nursery (I access through the main school building) not long after 4. And I'm a little scared of him; 3. A potential lack of willing volunteers in my staff. This is what I've either thought of or been told about so far: Raffle/Tombola/Jumble (a fete isn't really an option - see above); Cake sale; Be…
