Interview Questions?
by Guest- 7 replies

I have recently been appointed as Manager of an innovative Early Years Centre, opening in September, and quite unique where I come from. The problem is that on Thursday I am interviewing for new staff, and although I know I want enthusiastic, well trained and experienced staff, with up to date knowledge of current practices. I am not sure how to ask what I want I have never been in this position before, and find the whole process quite daunting   Do I ask how they feel about BTTM and FSC and it's relevance in our setting (non-compulsary, an option which some nurseries have adpoted) I positively enthuse about them and really want a team that…

Tent Tip Needed Please.

I want to put a tent up in nursery for the summer 2 term. Now I am thinking more of a large tent, not a two man thing. Has anyone else ever done this? Obviously I can't peg it down to carpet, so it needs to be self supporting. Would I be better with a frame tent (4 berth size) or a dome type? I don't want children to be able to rip it or push it over. It can't be outside because our outdoor is a main route through school grounds at the end of the day, and it will go walkies.

Pre-school Reading!

This happens this time of year regarding the parents of the children moving on in July. Parents start to complain about the lack of worksheets/tangible proof of learning. They begin to become concerned at our lack of teaching in areas they feel we should be concentrating on. Writing (we have writing materials around the pre-school all the time, and we encourage them to write their names on their pieces of work. To discover writing in their environment etc Today was just complaints about most aspects of the Pre-school. Well anyway I could go on. Recently a new child arrived at the pre-school. We looked through the info from the old Pre-school and they were tea…

My List Of Songs 1 2
by Guest- 35 replies

I have split my class into two family groups, and I wanted to type up a list of songs for each board. The NN and myself have both agreed that sometimes your mind goes blank when we have a songtime session, and we thought it would be a useful reference tool. I am an NQT, so I am still picking up good songs as i go, but here is a list of what i could think of in 15 minutes. Anyone think of any more good ones I could put on there? Thanks in advance. Number songs 5 little speckled frogs 5 Currant Buns 5 little men in a flying saucer 10 green bottles 5 little ducks 5 little monkeys swinging in a tree 5 little monkeys jumping on a bed 1,2,3,4,5, once I caught …

Staff In Sole Charge Of Child(ren)
by Guest- 7 replies

In another thread I read that a setting has a policy of always having two staff present to change a nappy. Do other people follow this procedure or have it as a policy too? One of the recommendations for our PLA accreditation is that no member of staff should ever be in sole charge of a child or children. I understand the reasons behind this (protecting staff from accusation of abuse), it's just that we have 3 staff for 17 children aged 2 years 9 months to 5. If 2 go off to change a nappy I wouldn't want to be the other one...... Also it would mean we'd have to stay as a whole group for the entire session, unless we have a parent helper in. Carolyn Manage…

Early Years Advisory Teacher
by Guest- 3 replies

I have applied for a post as an Early Years Advisory Teacher based in Kent, Thant and Dover area. As part of their exciting expansion of an already impressive team, this job will be looking after Playgroups, nursery schools and childminders (not state schools who are already catered for). Having run my own playgroup/nursery for over 6 years I have had three early years advisory teachers. There was a lot of chopping and changing at the start and a clash of personalities along the way. My question is 'What do you want from your early years advisory teacher''? I know that the three I had seemed only interested in the planning side - foundation stage - Long term - Meduim …

I posted a while ago that my committee were keen to open the playgroup for 5 sessions a week and keep their children at the playgroup for their preschool year instead of going to the nursery. We are in a very rural location and the children will be going to the local schools rather than the school the nursery is attached to. However, suddenly the chair (who isn't the most confident of people at the best of times) has suddenly had an attack of the jitters and has said she's not sure about it anymore which has sent a wave of panic through the rest of the committee. After an extremely lengthy meeting tonight I have been asked to come up with a 'plan' by Monday of what …

Shocked And Upset.

I moved jobs in January and I had a very distressing call from the NN at my last school this evening. A little girl that was in my class died last week from meningitis Apart from the disbelief and shock I have absolutely cried my eyes out. She was such a beautiful little girl, so shy and timid. I watched her confidence begin to emerge during my term at the school, and I just feel so depressed and totally drained. I am an NQT and this is the first time anything like this has happened to me...I hope that it is not something we have to deal with on a regular basis, I don't think I can stand the pain. I wish I could ease her family's pain. She never had the chance to shi…

As from 1st April all first aid courses undertaken by early years settings will have to have been for a minimum of 12 hours duration and include first aid for babies and young children. I know that some training has been the 1st aid at work course and this will no longer be adequate. Linda
