After reading many posts on the forum regarding famous paintings and the children creating their own impressions of them, it has spurred me on to begin introducing one painting a month. Can anyone help with the best ones i should start with?

This may sound a really silly question but it's bugging me so hope someone can help me out! I am aware that the staff:child ratio in pre school settings is 1:4 for under 3's and 1:8 for the older ones. So if you have 16 children of which 4 are under the age of three I presume you need one member of staff for them and two others for the remaining 12 children ? I have come across another persons interpretation of the figures as being 16 children of which no more than four are under 3yrs only requires 2 members of staff?

Disposable Gloves

Does anybody know if there are such things as disposable gloves for children and if so where I can buy them from? We have a little boy in pre-school who has very bad eczema, especially on his hands, and we need to keep them covered when he is painting and playing in the sand etc. We have cotton gloves for him but they have to be washed and we thought that disposable ones would be ideal. His mum would like them too. Linda

Hi, this months Practical Pre-school publication has an article from the Information Commissioners Office concerning the taking of photo's at school events. It says 'Photo's taken for personal use are exempt from the Data protection Act. This means that parents, friends and family members can take photo's of children taking part in school activities for the family album and can film events at school.' I know some of us have child protection issues to think about but I thought it might be handy to be aware that at least so far as data protection is concerned there isn't a problem. This site has also received a mention as ..'a great place to get informed answers to all yo…

Nursery Booklet

Hello This is my first time on this site/forum. I have just set up/converted our Nursery class and the reception class into a foundation stage unit. I am the newly appointed FSU co-ordinator mainly due a newly refurbished unit and an OFSTED in 3 weeks!! I have been at the school for just over a year and am now feeling brave enough to make some more changes! I would love to have a booklet that I can give to new parents telling them what happens in Nursery and what they can expect from the FS curriculum. Just wondering if anyone already has one that they would be willing to share? Any help would be fantastic, thanks.

Our school is changing the day after xmas beginning at 8:50 and finishing in the am at 12:30. We start again at 1:10. My problem is that the nursery finish at 11:30 and restart at 12:45. As we are trying to integrate for part of the day (nursery and R) and we have been having our weekly planning meeting at lunchtime, our times are getting further way from each other. My HT has said that i can have an hour for lunch finishing at 12:10 but I got the distinct feeling that she wasn't madly keen about that. What do others do as i know that the 3 session morning is very common in schools now? Our Nursery and Reception are different sides of a corridor with only the Nursery havi…

I am an NQT in a Nursery, and i am being pulled in two direstions. On one hand the experienced nursery nurses like to do creative work for displays using templates or a very demonstrative approach. Therefore they displays will look like what they are supposed to...i.e, you can tell what the display is supposed to be. lol. For example, a snowman, a santa etc. My FS coord. is very keen on letting the children do creative things how they see fit. I can see the benefit of letting children explore creatively, and praising their effort whatever it looks like...however...do i want snowmen and penguins, or do i want brown blobs of paint? I do not have that many children who co…
