I must admit Im not ...just lost my enthusiasm and get up and go (even tho had a week off) ...not sure if its the responsibility of being manager...only having 2 of us as staff team, meaning theres soooo much to do....being in a packaway setting and renting a hall where they want everything away ...fighting to get things done during the session..paperwork...frustration at not being able to support SEN children as I would like and feeling responsible.....time of the m onth..weather..dark nights etc etc! We are a morning pre-school and the committee are looking at doing afternoons (couple of days per week) as there is a demand for it from parents. I do not want to do …

Hello Everyone, I thought I would introduce myself. I have a small extended hours playgroup in Yorkshire where we have had a mud kitchen for almost three years. I have a fascination with children's freely chosen play and in particular the direction that this takes outdoors and specifically in the mud kitchen. Although increasingly I think the whole garden is the mud kitchen! I have been fortunate to receive funding (from the Centre for Research in Early Childhood and the University of Wolverhampton) to study children's play in the Mud Kitchen at PhD level (very scary and exciting at the same time). I am at the very early stages of this project and have developed a surve…

We are a day nursery in a rural area and very rarely have any children with EAL. We have a little boy at the moment who is 2 and from Bulgaria. He has been with us since the new year. He has only a handful of English words but when his parents collect him, he chatters away to them in Bulgarian, so has well developed language skills in his home language. We are looking for some ideas to support him. We don't know any Bulgarian, although of course we can ask his parents. Bulgarian has a different script to English (in the same way as Russian and Greek do). Any ideas gratefully received! Thanks.

Help. Today was the first day that we have had a den as our role play area inside for quite a while. It was set up as an explorers den with camp fire, cooking utensils, binoculars, maps and clipboards. (Following observed interests) But they just went crazy!! We were very boy orientated 12 older boys to 5 girls!! The play was rough, there was no purpose and just plain bedlam. What are we doing wrong??? I have observed this behaviour before when we have had dens or tents. But it does not happen in outside dens. Does anyone else have this problem, or is it just us? Any advice would be most welcomed.

We are a full daycare setting and currently collect our midday meal from the local primary school. The meals are ok, but not brilliant and the standard of cooking is very variable, sometimes quite burnt or overcooked. Also the portions are the same as a primary school child's and while some things can be divided up for little ones, not everything can, so there is a fair amount of wastage. So, I have been thinking about employing a cook. I have looked at some nurseries' websites, their lovely menus, many saying that they use local produce, organic meat etc. What I wanted to know, is how it all stacks up financially. How much do you pay a cook, how much do you spen…
