Well today was the day , despite most of the children dropping like flies at the end of last week and myself feeling rougher than a cats tongue , they were so Sparkly Knickers! Ok so a few did not want to get dressed , one was too ill to attend and one of the shepherds bowed out altogether but hey it's a nativity and getting up on stage is an achievement in itself. From 2 years to 4 years , the kings excelled and they all gave a fab performance of our rewritten version of Father Christmas needs a wee ' with over 50 guests plus school children , the vicar and others we had a blast. Raised lots of funds with the raffle and games and had our official door opening ( our n…

We are reviewing our policy on Baby Milk preparation. For the past 6 months we have been making up baby formula bottles up fresh each time. This means boiling the water and allowing it to cool before giving it to the babies. This obviously has to be thought through in advance and has some serious disadvantages. This was based on NHS guidelines claiming that bacteria would be killed off if prepared in this way. The guidelines also recommended not heating up bottles in a microwave because of the potential hot spots forming in the milk. However, after a recent discussion with a local health visitor, she suggested that to minimise the stress for the babies (and staff!) …

Hi everyone Last week we had a visit from our improvement advisor who slated everything we are doing- the planning was wrong, learning journeys were wrong (she didn't even look at them!), our indoor/outdoor environments were wrong, our partnership with parents was awful etc. She also said we wouldn't pass ofsted without major changes! This was a vey big shock to us and left us feeling very anxious. Well, this morning OFSTED turned up- to say we were worried is an understatement. But it went perfectly, she couldn't praise us enough and she was lovely! We are happy with our result but obviously can't share just yet. She had looked at our sef and website previous and g…

Poor eye contact
by Guest- 8 replies

Some time ago I read on the forum that we should not 'expect/encourage' children to give eye contact because it could make them feel 'threatened'. Does anyone know whether there is any truth in this and, if so, is there any evidence/academic source to back up this 'theory'?

Ok I'm stuck, looking for some out of the box ideas and I know you are all good at that ! We are in a church hall, the outdoor courtyard is accessed free flow through the session which is a direct door from our side room which is carpeted to the courtyard. Outside we have a play house, box's of various things, one table to have whatever on and chalk board and white board, also here's my problem we have a large wooden trough with a table at the side to make up our fantastic mud kitchen! But with the weather the concrete floor is mucky with the mud no matter how much you scrub it down the drain, the children are bringing such muddy prints inside that we are in for a serio…

As we live in a very rural area we really do not see people of a different ethnic background or with different skin colour. I have been advised to get some pictures on the wall (I do have multicultural resources but apparently I need pictures up) Can anyone recommend some for me? I would like to link these onto my world map to make them at least have a reason for being plonked on the wall!! Can you tell that I had Ofsted yesterday!!!

We have a new child staring in our setting, their home language is Tamil, I have searched but not found any appropriate images that I can use for adding the word welcome in Tamil to our poster of other languages, I have asked parents to write down some key phrases but they were adamant that they only wanted him to speak English, I did try to explain that we want to acknowledge his home language as its important to support both that and his English, but I am not entirely sure they understood me! lol I also asked what religion if any they practice, they did not understand the question so I will try again, having researched the area they originate from it says that the popu…

Areas of learning
by Guest- 8 replies

Hi everyone, I am in the process of buying a pre existing pack away preschool and I have a couple of questions regarding setting up areas of learning. At the moment, the setting is set up every day in a different way (they have community playthings room dividers and units). When you set up, do you keep the areas of learning in the same place or do you change it around every day also? Another thing, do you have indoor water and sand trays? If so, do you you have them out each day? Last question....for now anyway...!!....do you have a fine motor skills area? If so, how do you set this up? Thanks so much, K x
