Hi there, This is my first ever post on here! We are getting an Apple iPad, and are hoping for some advice on the best apps to purchase. I know from downloading them at home for my daughter that many have adverts and extra upgrades you have to pay for etc so I'm hoping there are some out there that people have found that are more suitable for settings. Thank you in advance!

I seem to be posting a lot today but I wonder if anyone has any ideas on this? I hope it's ok to post this type of question. Four year old has been in my setting from five months old. Used to have quite extreme tantrums at two but was well past that and dealt with any upset by going off to play alone for a few minutes and then returning. At the end of the summer term she was excited about going to school and very engaged and sociable. She wasn't here very much over the summer and had an extended family holiday which meant that she missed the first two weeks of term. I totally understand that she is new to the whole school environment and that she is tired but her behavio…

Hi, I work at a sessional playgroup that has lunchtime provision on two days, where the parents provide lunchboxes. The children all sit together with a member of staff on 2 or 3 tables to have their lunch but we have an issue with what to do with the children as and when they finish... Some of the children just sit, eat and finish without any fuss (great!) whilst others dither, chat and generally don't eat until they have one to one 'encouragement'. We ask the children to go and sit in the book corner when they are finished so as not to distract those who are still eating, but the really slow ones seem to take ages, which is stopping the others from getting back to pla…

I am looking for some emotions pictures to put up, can anybody recommend some for me? I am trying to decide if we should pose the children in various states of emotion or if it should be strangers faces? What have you got up?

Hi all I am considering becoming a childminder with my deputy (working together). It would mean I need to find a house to rent that we could also work from. I currently run a preschool but we are very low on numbers (only 12 children) which from parents views etc is because we are in a tiny village (one road) and we have no passing traffic. We have just got a few questions. Has anyone changed from preschool to childminder? Did you lose the children you had at preschool? Do you work all year round? What about holidays? Can you live comfortably off the income from childminding? Do you get funded 3/4 year old come to you rather than a preschool? What sort of ages are t…

Hi So a new member of staff joined us shortly after the start of term bringing her child as part of the pre-schools membership. Child 'S' enjoys one to one hugely but finds it hard to share, take turns and not be first (banged head on concrete path when this didn't happen). When things don't go 'S's' way 'S' will hit out, push, slap, throw toys. 'S' will react to most suggestions by saying 'No way' will not tidy up after snack and lunch and will often run away and hide under cushions giggling, seemingly making it a game. (Mum/Staff says S wants to be chased.) 'S' runs everywhere inside and out. We have taken on board the fact that 'S' has come to a new pre-school and n…

Hi everyone. Does anyone know of any books which would be good for reading to a 4 year old whose sibling is being cared for in the special care baby unit? It's not a pre-term baby, but there were major problems when the baby was born and she is quite poorly. As it is not the expected events when a baby is born, I just wondered if anyone could suggest any good books to read... Many thanks,

woodwork and real tools

Hi do any of the Childminders on here use real tools and provide woodworking activities for the children in the setting? I have read lots of really good advice about how to set this up but it is all from nursery or school settings where the mix of ages isn't so big and I would be interested to know how other Childminders managed it? I work with an assistant so my thoughts would be that rather than leaving the tools out they would be brought out for a specific session with children who we felt were developmentally ready to use them and work with one adult whilst the other adult entertained the babies. Any thoughts or advice gratefully received, thanks.

does anyone use target tracker?

i have looked at the end of year reports for EYFS and it is really negative for less able children, with aspects just saying they are below age-related expectations, so that would be for all 17 for some of ours by the end of the year. reception teacher not so worried as hers will just be 3 E's, and emerging in ELG sounds better than ours. what have other people done with target tracker reports to improve them?
