When Ofsted visit, would they have the right to look at a child's SENCO/safeguarding folder? Obviously these contain sensitive and confidential information relating to families.

A few years ago, we used to claim our free milk entitlement through the NMRU via Cool Milk. We had so many problems as well as the constant emails from NMRU asking to confirm numbers and more or less threatening life imprisonment if you over-claimed, that I stopped claiming and started paying for the milk ourselves. Now that money is very tight, I thought it would be sensible to start claiming again. We started three weeks ago and have immediately sunk back into the endless problems of non-delivery and having our claim questioned. I feel like giving up again but wondered what other people do. Can I claim direct from NMRU without going through Cool Milk or anot…

So it’s time we had a reshuffle and change around in our indoor environment. I have been looking online for lots of inspiration and different ideas to try. I know the curiosity approach is very popular and whilst I love some of their ideas I still firmly believe that there is a place for our traditional nursery toys as well. (Some of the environments end up looking like car boot sales and I would love to see these settings in action to see how the children play and engage with the items.) Just wondered if you would share photo’s or ideas of the most popular areas in your settings. Thank you in advance.

So after being very busy for the last seven years, we have hit an all time low with numbers. We knew we were going to run at a loss this year and decided that we could absorb this cost with the hope that it would be for this year only. Sadly numbers are predicted to be low for another year. After a urgent committee meeeting last week it was decided that we would have to fundraise madly to try and stay open. Obviously there are lots of settings in our position and sadly a lot who have already closed. Just thought it might be good to start a thread where we could share ideas on what we are all doing to cut down on costs/outgoings and what people are doing to increase f…

The preschool that has been open for over 40 years and I've been at for 11 has finally closed. The children left on Wednesday and the committee were very conspicuous by their absence at our farewell party. The apathy from the parents was apparent as well, which is one of the reasons we closed. Along with the fact that we have no children and none wanting to start. They were asked to provide food for the party and only a few did. And of course the ones who did also gave us cards with lovely words inside. I know we don't do this job for presents but a card from the committee is not too much to ask for is it? I wasn't sad on the last day as I feel I've done my sad…

Afternoon Everyone. My nursery has fencing around the garden (bamboo type sheets) but over time they spilt/wind has damaged them and I now need to buy new fencing (around 4 meters high) I was thinking instead of plain bamboo that it would be good if I could buy? some sheets/covering the area (of course child friendly) to go around the whole garden space??? Just wondered if anyone else used something other than fencing/bamboo ? and was willing to share their ideas/photos? Many thanks. Emma

Hi everyone I wonder if anyone can give me advice. Every nursery I have worked at, there are different rules regarding scanning daily record charts. Some places don't but obviously keep a file of them all (without scanning them in). What do you all do? Thank you!

Hi all, We are a small village preschool, and offer 30 hours. (we are the only preschool in the local area that does so) Demand hasn't been massively high, but as this school year has gone on, we are finding more and more children are accessing the hours- by summer term, we will have 6 children out of 18 per session, accessing more than 20 hours per week, and numbers are over 10 children accessing more than 20 hours from September. My question is how does everyone keep their setting fresh and exciting for the children that just come for a maximum of 15 hours or less, as well as the children that come for the full 30 hours. I find we tend to repeat our morning session…

Hi All During one of our committee meetings (discussing the endless maintenance work we have to carry out as we have a a full repairing lease) someone mentioned whether we could apply for any grants (for example national lottery) I wouldn't really know where to start, when I joined our committee we had a strong bank balance and have made loads of improvements to our setting including tree house and mud kitchen for the garden. We get no help for the building maintenance from the landlord who are our local council. Our roof will need replacing one day....is this something worth considering? Had anyone had any success in applying for any grants to improve…
