What would you think of as 'spiritual well-being? I am looking at a statement that says "Children's health is an integral part of their emotional, mental, social, environmental and spiritual well-being..." All the others I understand, but I'm a bit flummoxed by 'spiritual well-being".

Communication Diaries

Hi Every body, we are a private day nursery, we currently use communication diaries for all of our children, 0-3 years have daily and 3 plus have a weekly one. We currently make our own diaries and they are popularwith both parents and ofsted however not with the staff. We are currently reviewing them to make them more managable and was wandering if any one has new ideas to help with this or use them at your settings which i could have a look at. TIA

on entry assessments

we have been given a learning journey for a child's previous pre-school, and it looks like they only highlighted each statement if there were 3 lots of evidence in their folder for their on entry assessment. so on entry it looks like she is much lower than i'm sure she was, as she is roughly age-appropriate now, 6 months later. we all sit together a month or so after they start and go through each child, highlighting where they are, using learning journeys/long observations knowledge of child/parents input etc. i don't expect 3 lots of evidence. from then on though we don't highlight until there are 3 lots of evidence, and this informs our ongoing assessments. that w…

Someone asked me today if I could crystallize what was wrong with the EYFS and the job of running/being a practitioner in a pre-school? I think they were trying to get me to look at what I want to change (or what I would like to change) given the option. It did get me thinking! wondered what others would say so thought I'd ask so what do you all think?

Assessment for Makaton

We currently have a child with us who is beginning to use Makaton signing but as yet there is no language. This child has SEN and is beginning to sign for things she wants or can see which is a big step for her, however I am unsure of how to show development on Tapestry for this new skill. I was just wondering if other settings have children who use Makaton how they assess their language development?

We were all very excited yesterday when our nursery teacher brought in a paddling pool. We did a risk assessment to decide where and how, tested it out and then emailed our parents to introduce it, telling them that if they would like their child to have a splash in the pool to please send in appropriate swimwear and a towel. As the children arrived this morning eagerly clutching their swimming gear, we got a message from the headmaster saying that the paddling pool was a definite no-no, his main issues being: some parents may object to boys and girls getting changed together, e.g. on religious grounds safeguarding issues - e.g. "towel drying children" apparently it doe…

After the year I had with false allegations, and little support from anyone (committee or county) I have decided to join a Union. It is a stressful time to be falsely accused of something you didn't do and going it alone is awful. It seems there is a current climate of people, (some parents and unfortunately staff) who think if you don't do it my way, or you haven't jumped high enough for me then I'll report you! I want to have support and most importantly legal representation should it happen again. I've read older posts on various unions. Can anyone who is in one recommend one based on experience of using it if needed please? I know Voice is for Early years. I'm…
