Hi All One of our little ones is moving to school in September. No one else is going to the same school. He has been to visit his teacher twice and we did invite her to visit at pre-school but they felt that they didn't have time, with it only being one child. Over the past few weeks, us and his mum have noticed a huge change in his behaviour. He will not listen to anything he is told, started biting other children and even threw his brothers shoes out of a moving car window! He is usually a lovely, well behaved little boy. He has come on in leaps and bounds with us, having started with us not being able to speak and having input from the sen inclusion service. I had a…

Hi everyone, I work in a daycare nursery with rooms for under two's, 2-3 and 3-5. So obviously we work under the 1:3, 1:4 and 1:13 ratio (with the 1:13 being because we have an EYPS) When we go to the garden and everyone is out there, 34 children and 8 staff. Can some staff (maybe 2) come inside and be within hearing of other staff to do some prep work on a computer or will they need to be with the children? The problem in my understanding is the Statutory Framework states " CHILDREN must be within sight or hearing" therefore if we are in the building, we cannot hear the CHILDREN but we can hear STAFF if they call us loudly to ask for assistance. What is everyone else…

Hi everyone, I have been looking into the observations we do in our nursery. We do two types of observations, written or photographic. Both observations include a short description of what happened, the next step, what characteristic of effective learning was used and which of the seven areas of learning and development it focused on. I have wondered if we should start using other types of observations. What observations do others do? Thanks!

Wondering if anyone can help with. I have a little boy who is 4 in August still in nappies, mum says she's spoken to the HV who suggests we all leave potty training alone and wait until the summer hols to address the issue.... We've gone along with this despite not really wanting to, as he was sitting on the toilet with us. He is now just soiling his nappy and not telling anyone (as a younger child would). Anyhow he is a strong willed child who likes nothing more than playing alone. He will not join in any activities so it's hard to move him on. He can count, 1 more 1 less, knows letter sounds, alphabet etc but lacks physical and PSED. We moved on to scissor work …

Our insurers have said we are not insured to store medication on site so medication should, during the time required, be brought daily to the setting and taken home with the parent /carer.. What do you do? If a parent forgot their child's inhaler or epi pen it could be a disaster.

Hi, So today while speaking to a parent about how an incident that happened on Friday had been put on Facebook and how parents had not only called a 3 year old a bully but also stated that we don't know what's going on, a child slipped past my TA to run back to her mum outside! Feel awful. Not sure how to deal with it all, my head about to explode! Any advice/suggestions/critism even welcome! Green Hippo x

after some advice, my 2 older early years educators have not yet familiarised themselves with the EYFS development matters. i said today that they need to be familiar with 22-36, 30-50 and 40-40 bands in order to be able to plan activities to meet next steps/assess where their children are/fill in next steps in learning journeys etc etc. am i being harsh? they seemed horrified (one has been in the nursery for 16 years, other 3. i've been there 7 years.) what do you think? it's a school nursery
