Appreciate any ideas or advice, tips or tricks. We currently have a group who are incredibly messy in their play. Half hour into the session it looks like a bomb has hit. Now some of this play is fully engaged and warrants the mess but some I think it has just become a habit to get as much out as possible. (And it’s not even the two year olds) It has suddenly become clear to me that there is no care or respect for the toys. I have started restricting what they can have out and have made my expectations very clear about putting something away before getting something else out. Tidy up time has also become a battle with children not seeming to care. I am addressing thi…

We have just signed up to The Curiosity Approach accreditation and I just wondered if anyone else out there has completed this or are in the process. How did you find it or how are you getting on? Any recommendations or things to watch out for? Thanks in advance

Just picking up on a comment made by my early years consultant at a recent visit and thinking about how to implement it. How do you ensure that your environment is print rich? But so that the children actually gain something from it and it's not just up for the sake of Ofsted. Would love to hear what you do and how you do it.

I did post something similar a while ago but it looks like it will become reality quite soon so would like some advice. I run a committee run pre-school in a village hall. In the village is a small first school. We have very few children and are finding it difficult to recruit new children. I know most pre-schools are suffering at the moment due to lots of different factors. We did think we would close two years ago but have limped on but I don't know how long we can carry on limping. I have 8 children of which 3 are 3 year old funded and 1 which is 2 year funded (this will come to an end in December and he will be 3 year funded which means losing money for him). Th…

I have been invited to a redundancy consultation meeting. Is there anything in particular I should ask? Also, the parents were told last Monday that we are closing but all our correspondence has not confirmed this. One of my staff took advice to be told that this was effectively unfair dismissal but when I asked the same question there was no comment. Does anybody have any advice. Thank you.

I have just received notification that one of my children is now in receipt of EYPP (more trouble than it’s worth) He is currently waiting to be seen by the SALT after I referred him. Looking for some ideas on what to spend the money on to help his language development. He has all the language and is very bright and communicates freely but some of his speech is unclear. I don’t think he will be taken on by the SALT (once he finally gets seen) as I don’t think his is a serious enough case. I have been doing lots of letters and sounds phase 1 with him and lots of repeating and scaffolding of language. I have £113 to spend, what do you suggest that would benefit him? Wo…

Hi everyone, I'm a childminder and wondered if anyone can help to clarify the variations exception to ratios?? I currently look after two 2 year olds whose Mums are both pregnant and due within a month of each other. Both intend to keep their children with me and swap with their baby when they go back to work (length of maternity leave not yet known). My question is, can I have two babies under 1 during this cross over period as the exception says we can COC by having the baby of a sibling but the sibling would actually be leaving to make way for the baby in both cases? Or would it be better if I had the older sibling stay when the baby starts for a short time in …

We've recently registered with the LA for this. The LA provides us with a "head-count" day, normally about three weeks after the beginning of term, when we submit our data. The LA tell me that any existing children who want to expand their weekly hours (from, say 20 to 25) *after* head-count day will not qualify for the grant for those extra hours that term. I'm happy to accept that but I'm not convinced the LA is right about this. Any views?
