Hi I have two children who are causing chaos each session due to disruptive behaviour. In nearly 10 years in my job, I have never encountered it to this extent. They are quite boisterous, tons of energy, race around, wrestle, are quite rude at times, don't really play unless we separate them and the list is much more exhaustive than this but generally other children are now starting to copy their behaviour and I feel I've lost the plot. We are over staffed and try to separate them as much as possible doing one on one activities with them, but at the end of the day there are always toilet runs and other children to spend time with and we are finding it difficult to separ…

My TA recently attended a course and returned to nursery with some very useful information - useful to me because I had not come across the fact before viz. 'when helping children to put on their coats the adult should stand behind the child to show them how to do up the zip, because when standing in front the child sees the mirror image which can cause confusion' To many, this may seem 'obvious' or be something that they learned long ago during the course of their career; but this was 'new' to me and is a piece of 'useful information' that I will be putting into practice. It has made me think that there must be hundreds of facts/tips that we could share on the fsf - s…

Hi All I hope you have had a better week than we have! On Monday one of our little ones went around totally trashing the room and breaking toys. On Tuesday we had a visit from our area senco and our concerns regarding one of our little girls were confirmed so have got a meeting with her mum on Monday. On Wednesday one of our little ones fell over whilst running and cut his forehead open and gave himself a nose bleed. Thankfully he is fine and didn't hardly cry. Mum was fine too. He returned the next day and climbed on a chair and fell off and banged the back of his head (he was fine) and then his big sister fell and grazed her nose on a table! To top it off I receiv…

Hi I have a child attending at Preschool. He is 3yrs 9 mths and has been attending for just under a year. He has always been boisterous (ok that's polite) and very angry. Initially he had speech delay and we thought it was probably a communication issues and I could honestly say we had made good improvement leading up to the last summer hols. THEN ....he returned in September with much improved speech but had lost any progress we had previously achieved and the physical behaviour and aggression was of great concern. Cut the story short but we are at the point now that children and staff are being hurt (bitten, pinched, shouted at, pushed, toys thrown, kicked....y…

Please can anyone give me some information on health and safety courses. None of us, on my staff team have done any health and safety training. Can anyone tell me what are the regulations, what course do we do? We are members of EDUCARE and they do have an online course but I do not want to spend out on it(£15 each) if its not the right one. I am thinking of contacting some training companies and seeing if we can invite other settings along as well to spread the cost. Just really need to know what it is we are required to do?? Help please :1b

Our new committee are a fab bunch and next week they want to make cakes to sell at a Valentines party. One of our staff thinks we cant sell cakes made at home anymore and to be honest I have a vague memory about it too. So, can parents make cakes to sell or did the H&S rules change?

Panicking about Ofsted

I opened a preschool with my business partner in November 2012. We were inspected last April (first inspection after being open for 5 months) and received a Satisfactory grading. We were pleased with that and planned our improvements, unfortunately due to time constraints as we are both included in the ratios our improvements are not really happening. I am now starting to panic that Ofsted may visit us again soon and as the registered person think we should be doing more to make our planned improvements. I have just gone through the evaluation schedule and with the exception of a couple of points (which are now in Good) we are still firmly in the Requires Improvement …

Hi all. This is my first post on here but I have been reading the forum threads and found it very helpful. I have recently taken on the role of managing a pack away nursery setting based in a hall. We have a garden but have very limited resources and the owners don't seem keen to 'invest'. I am lucky enough to have a fabulous team of staff who are very keen to make things work and I have a huge challenge ahead of me in all areas. One thing I am really interested to know is how other nursery managers have managed to create a stimulating outdoor area in this kind of setting and what do you provide for the children that is easy to pack away? I have heard about c…

toilets!

we have a maximum of 39 children (nursery). is there a specified number of toilets we have to have? i know it used to be 1 toilet for every 10 children ages ago, but has it changed? we have 4 but want to turn one into an adult loo for staff as we are going to be away from rest of school in separate building when it is complete - just across our garden, but if we go over to the building it'll take at least 5 mins and leave 2 staff with 39 - potentially. and i don't plan on crossing my legs for 3 hours plus!! any ideas?
