From childminders to nursery?
by Guest- 4 replies

Hi Guys, Im wondering whether to change my childminding group into a nursery and am looking for some advice. My reason for this is mainly that I do not want to be here all the time as I need time off to study and as a childminding group I need to be on the premises. Can anyone tell me if it was worth changing to a nursery with the change of ratios? The qualifications are not a problem. Did you have to make any changes to your property? Did you have problems getting planning? Did neighbours object? Anything else I need to consider? Thank you!!

Part of our continuous provision is really underused and is not really interesting to the children. We have a set of wooden shelves with the following in wicker baskets: Threading (a few different sorts) Magnifying glasses, torches and magnets Collections of things - eggs, stones, hearts, natural stuff such as pine cones Some number and shape related puzzles Sandpaper numbers Sandpaper letters Letter pebbles Links (coloured plastic chain that links together) Kiddi counters (little people to sort/play with) The children do use the resources now and again, but really only with an adult and its been like that for ages. We don't have construction resources on…

Does anyone use Action Kids, the physical development programme by Val Sabin? If you do, could you tell me how old the children are and which version you use? Would you recommend it?

lunch boxes

The children in my setting bring packed lunches which we store in two fridges. Is this necessary? I cannot find information anywhere. Space is in short supply ( normal, I hear you all say). So being able to remove at least one fridge would be great. Primary schools do not store lunch boxes in fridges so I was wondering why we do. We would of course explain to parent/carers the need to not use quick to perish things such as ham in lunches and to include an ice pack. Thoughts and/or where to find the legal stuff would be very welcome. It is not in EYFS!

Hi We currently review our children's next steps every half term and set new ones if necessary. They all have one next step for each area of learning. I am thinking that we don't always need one for all areas of learning, as PSE and CLL are area's that are supported and encouraged all the time when playing with and talking to the children. Also, they can't really be planned for with regards to setting up an activity to encourage them as all activities should promote social and communication skills anyway. Do you all plan next steps for PSE and CLL?

Rewarding Good Behaviour

Hi, We are looking at ways in which we can reward good behaviour for all of our children. How do you do it in your nursery's? We were thinking of giving the children a jar to fill with marbles and maybe some sort of a personal chart for the children with more challenging behaviour as well as a marble jar???? How often would you let them have a reward and what sort of a reward? Would love to hear your ideas. Thank You.

http://www.athomechildcare.co.uk/index.php/support-for-childminders/how-much-does-it-cost Hi, I know each local authority seems to vary in the training available and how much they charge for this. I've always been lucky and received good support. Now this is changing I was fascinated by the (hopefully) attached document. Also, in the past all early year providers in our area have accessed the same training. I've worked as a teacher, nursery manager and childminder and always found this useful for networking and sharing experiences. Under childminding agencies does this mean nurseries and preschools will access different training to childminders, splitting up an e…

We have been lucky enough to acquire an extra bit of outdoor space. I would like a visit from the team at Cool Canvas to hear about some of their ideas for the space (not that we have a big budget to spend but I'd like their input!). Oliver at Cool Canvas has said he can come and see us but would like to visit two or three other settings in the region to make his visit a bit more worthwhile. Let me know if you're in our part of the world and would like a visit too. Here's the link to their website. http://www.naturalplayareas.co.uk/
