Hi all I teach in a school nursery and just wanted to know how others in a similar setting organised writing activities. We have the usual writing area and the children have lots of opportunities to mark make both indoors and out. I was curious to know how you may organise more formal writing opportunities where by you teach certain writing skills and how are the groups of children organised? We have run writing activities as a whole group e.g. 13 as part of a family group but this is getting harder to organise. Any ideas/examples would be very much appreciated to give me a better idea how to progress. Thank you for any help in advance.

to discuss the needs of a child that I look after. There will be the HV, SLT, SENCO, nursery nurse, parents and me (childminder). I pushed for this child to be seen and now a meeting is being held to discuss whether he needs to be seen by a paediatrician. I think he has a lot of signs and symptoms of an ASD. Im actually feeling very side lined as I have only been invited to this meeting by the childs parents. The HV has not even spoken to me, who has been looking after this child 10hrs a day for 2years! She seems far more concerned with the views of the nursery staff - he does his 15hrs there and has only been there 4wks! Think I just needed a bit of a moan …

Not really a work question but a family member asked me for some recommendations on basic books for child development (I quote here 'one for dummies'!!) all the ones I have are for practitioners, training/courses or linked to practice and too in-depth I think for what she wants. Does anyone have any ideas on some good ones?

Hi Sorry its me again... I look after a child before/after school some days of the week. Her mum works shifts so childs time with me is different each week. Sometimes I have her as early as 6.30am and sometimes as late as 7.30pm. My daughter goes to bed at 7.30. This child is sometimes not going to bed til late as when collected they sometimes go to the shops or have to collect something from somewhere. Her parents are separated. My concern is that she is spending less and less time in her own bed due to her mums work commitments. I feel she is putting her career before her child. In the past 8 days she has slept at home once, at dads, at grandmas, at nannas, a…

Hello ! This probably isnt something most of you would do but Im sure your all full of good ideas! 24th-28th June is Child safety week and as a childrens centre we would like to mark it ! we will have displays and fire engine visits and nurses etc but I would like to really involve the parents to encourage them to change some of their ways! So we will be running some demonstrations such as pouring blackcurrent over a doll in a white baby grow to see how far a spilled hot drink would spread and burn a baby, leaving straightners on and guessing and testing how long it takes to cool down, bitrex stamps to taste, BUT any other ideas on how I can visually sh…

Hi All I was wondering if anyone has the 2013 transition reports for preschool to reception and if so could you be so kind as to post a template on here. I've asked my own LA but they are really slow in sending it on. Thanks so much

Full day-care vs. Sessional day-care

I have been offered a job at a full day-care nursery. My previous roles have all been in schools and sessional day-care. I would love it if anyone who has worked in different types of settings could explain how they felt they differed in general terms. (Trying not to sound like an idiot!) I’m just curious as to how others have found it. Many thanks MCL

Hi all We have a few of our children (only 6!) moving onto school this September. 1 is hopefully going to a special school but the others are all going to the local school close to us. Their new teacher is visiting them at our setting next Tuesday morning. She said its for an informal chat to us and the children so they get to know her a little bit. They are also going to the school with their parents for a couple of sessions in a few weeks. I just wondered would you give their transition summary sheets to her when she visits or would you send them nearer to the end of term? Its the first time any of our children have left to go to school because this is o…

Hi All Last year we made a DVD for all the children featuring photos we had took throughout the year. In the background we had songs playing- we used: the high school musical song 'We're all in this together' Barney- 'I love you' and 'Best of friends' Toy story- 'you've got a friend in me' The parents all loved the DVD and many said they had tears in their eyes. I would like to do another one this year but would like to use different songs. Any ideas? Thank-You :1b
