Could anyone recommend a good book on observation and planning more for actual vocabulary to be used. We had some training by an Early Years Specialist today and the one thing that came out of it was we are being too wordy in our obs rather than being focused. Also need help with looking at our obs and seeing how best we can plan around what has been seen and perhaps extend a childs learning. There are some good ones on Amazon but it is knowing which one is recommended! I want to move away from flogging a dead horse ie putting out everything to do with leaves, conkers, acorns etc for autumn theme which will run an entire month when in actual fact children are not inte…

Extending a topic - hats!

Last month we had a slight problem in our dressing up area - there wasn't enough there to entertain the boys and naturally they resorted to putting on the dresses which caused problems as the girls wanted them too! We made a decision to put out dresses and hats this month and the whole interest is in cowboys! How would I extend this topic as one or two just want to put on the hats and lie about on the sofas! Today we tried to encourage them to make horses using large rolls which you get posters in and adding a head/ribbon on the top but now we have run out of ideas! Any suggestions??

Volunteers

We are a small community based playgroup in NI and work with 12 children and 2 volunteers from the local Management Committee (working on a rota basis). Over the past 24 hours we have received 2 requests for 2 other volunteers from the Community to use our setting as part of their work experience while doing courses relating to nursing and Early Years. One is 16 years of age and the other is a mother with young children who has already done part of her experience in a school based setting. My question is this - what process do we go through now to firstly accept their application and then understand their role in the setting? I have never had this before and ob…

During the session this morning, the playroom suddenly filled up with an electrical burning smell. We evacuated straight away into the schools hall. (Thank goodness for the fire drills we have done this term) I called the schools health and safety bod to come back into the room and smell and we decided after turning off anything electrical to call the fire brigade (non urgent number) Ten minutes later we had our village engine, another engine from another village and a fast responder all turn up!!! Nine burly fire fighters in the playroom and I think they were more trouble than the children!! Eventually it was traced to a strip light with a faulty compresser (dated 1…

We have a child aged 4 who we are trying to support in terms of his listening, understanding and processing skills. He just seems zoned out at times! You could be talking to him on his level have eye contact and he is really not following you at all. We ask the children to say lift their table mat and a cup then bring it to the table and this is something we do every day with them - just repeating the words so that they remember but he never seems to click. He will sit down at the table without anything and it takes him quite a time to be told repeatedly that he needs the mat and cup to have snack. Similarly when he goes to wash his hands he will stand and look in th…

I'm going to speak to Mum for ideas but wondered if anyone had done something before or if you have any ideas? I've got LOADS of info to print out for parents and children but really want something different and fun to do to raise money

Advice Needed On Career

Hello lovely people, I have been a class teacher for over 13 years, and a very happy school nursery teacher for 3 of those. However whilst I adore my job, when it involves the children I am increasingly unhappy about the way nursery is perceived when it is part of a school and I am seriously considering leaving school teaching and applying to work in a Nursery. I was wondering if anyone has done this? or if you've employed former teachers? and what level of job should I apply for? I know it would be quite a change in salary and working patterns but I am beginning to wonder if, for my happiness, its worth the cost? I appreciate any advice that you guys have th…

Just a quick question, my new assistant also works in after school club at another school, she is a level 2 and training to be a level 3 and is quite inexperienced. She is the only person working at any one time and has as many as 8 children. Is this illegal? I know nothing about ratios for this but it really worrys me that she is on her own. We have talked about it and it worries her as well but she lacks confidence to speak out. I just wanted to get my facts straight before I go any further to help her. :1b
