I'd be grateful if you could share with me the rules you have for your setting that the children are made aware of, such as being kind, no running, quiet voices etc. I'm making a poster for the children and would be interested in what rules your setting has. Thanks in advance ppp

when i had my performance management today i was discussing a phonics target with my head and mentioned many of the children have come in not knowing any rhymes, or just 1 or 2. she said don't bother wasting time teaching them. is it just me, or aren't rhymes the building blocks of understanding rhyme? it's an infant school so she should be clued up on these things. i am now confused............. and she said reception didn't use the development bands last year so it's all change for them this year. surely they should have been using them too?

Hello My setting is part of the PLSA however I'm starting to wonder if it's something we should keep on with. I find that we still ave to pay for various things like policies and that when we do buy them OFSTED don't really like us using them. Are any of you members? Is it worth it? Thanks

I have a little girl aged 3 who regularly interjects "Oh my God!" or "Oh for God's sake" at quite regular intervals. Now, I'm uncomfortable with this, I don't think it's appropriate, and I know I wouldn't have been happy if my children came home from Preschool saying it. I have told her that we don't say that at Preschool and suggested some other things she could use instead (one of the other children even pointed out that she could say 'oh my goodness' independently) Now is it just me? Am I being a fuddy-duddy? I don't like to hear adults saying this, but a 3 year old!!!! Obviously it's something she hears on a regular basis, so I can't really say it's 'not…

Hi i have recently been landed with the role of manager i didn't want it but have no choice at the moment - it's a very long story but i am going to need help. i have been reading this forum for interest for a while and see that you are all a great support to each other. so i hope that i can be of help (even just to have a rant at) to you all. First thing: Appraisals, how often do you do them and does anyone know of a good template. i would guess at twice a year, one informal and one formal? You will probably see quite a lot of me in the coming months And my smilies dont work.... Thanks in advance - Louise. (Lou)

Handprints on tea towels

Last year our big fundraiser just before Christmas was our own produced recipe booklet with the children's group photo on the outside cover. The parents have asked to do something similar this year. We always launch it with a coffee evening and charge for entrance and have various stalls selling jewellery, jam, cards, wooden Christmas ornaments etc. I was thinking along the lines of a tea towel done with all the children's handprints on it. Has anyone ever done something like this and if so could they recommend a good company to get them printed with? Would you include a group photo of the children or just our name/logo? Roughly how much would it cost to print th…

With the expansion of funding for 2 year olds I was wondering how settings are preparing for this? How will this expansion affect your provision? Or are the Government making much ado about nothing when their is also a huge part of Childcare providers already looking after two year olds? A big part of this provision are exsisting Childminders, therefore why the panic? Childminders have always had two years as part of their core business. Are Childminders therefore being overlooked as rarely are they mentioned in this new scheme? What are settings going to provide for 2 year olds that they already do not? I have all these questions going through my mind! What do …

Underage Sex
by Guest- 12 replies

I have attended a Safeguarding course only appro 4 months ago and was horrified to be told that there is no age of consent for sex, I argued the case but the trainer insisted that if you had a 18 year old having sex with a 14year old and the 14 year old consented and that social services etc were happy with that, that they can carry on without any repurcussions. My understanding was that any person having sex with a minor under the age of 16 years faces prosecution whatever the case. This has also caused confusion with some of my older sons friends who were told at school that it was okay to have sex at the age of 14 years without any worry but the law when you look it …

Parents Newsletter Inspiration

About to print off my October Newsletter to distribute next Monday. Looking for some inspiration - parents are presently coming in at the end of our session and saying "where you a good boy today" and this is directed at us as workers! We want to get them away from the idea of good, bad or even naughty! It is really about trying to teach them as parents to ask appropriate questions that are relevant to their children and also in a sense how we can respond to this! We sort of feel that if we could show the parents to teach their chidlren about listening to us as adults and doing as we asked because at present we seem to have no respect as such! We have tried all the u…
