We had a child today (a 3 year old) make a comment about another child's skin colour - it wasn't a very nice comment but I also feel that it might have been said in the same way that children say 'you're not my best friend', 'you can't play here because you're a boy' We're really not sure how to handle this, the parents are absolutely devastated that there child would say something derogatory so it seemed clear this wasn't an attitude adopted from home. Any advice on what to say to parents to help them feel less horrified would be great! We also thought that lots of comparison activities about what we are like, what we enjoy, what we look like would be good, …

Hi We are going on a day trip to the farm and we have one little girl (2yrs) who has possible special needs and has very little sense of danger and does not respond to her name (or any other speech either). What would you do if you were taking this child out? Can we use reins/wrist straps? Do we have to get parents permission (mum is in denial at the moment that anything is 'wrong'). Any advice would be great

One of our parents has commented that when her older son was at playgroup they kept individual diaries for all the children which paretns and staff could write any comments or reminders in or stick photos in etc. We are only open for 3 hours per day. Does anyone else do these and do you find them easy to manage and are they useful? Also, do you write something in each day or once a week or just when there is something to write? Thanks

I expect a lot of you know this recipe, but I made it today for the first time and the children loved it. Its called cloud dough and the recipe is from the Imagination tree website, its more like silky mouldable sand. Mix seven cups of any flour with one cup of baby oil and thats it!!! I gave the children heart shape silicone bun cases and birthday candles and it kept them at the tray for a really long time. Plus the room smelled lovely because of the baby oil. (remember any allergies)

We are a small playgroup in Northern Ireland opened January 2011 with 12 children. As some of you know from previous postings we have a couple of difficult children and they are difficult believe you me! One of them has violent tendencies and does not realise what he is doing, it might be developmental or age related we are not sure and another child just gets him riled. To be honest we have had dealings with the child's parents - specifically the one who gets the other riled up and it left me in tears one day with the father as he told me off in no uncertain terms about how I handle things. I am emotionally easily upset and find it difficult to deal with such things.…

Sorry but I need to have a moan. For over a year I feel as I have been banging my head against a brick wall and friday was the final bang! We are due a visit from a top person to check our status against new ofsted criteria so as usual panic even though we got good with outstanding features last June(its a long story about the visit so wont bore you). Just checking that the year R had every thing in place and enquired about CI and the structure of it as the person who is visiting is early years and very well known in her position. She visited three years ago and picked up on having more structure etc. Any way the year R teachers told me they just let the children go and p…

Hi there, I am going bonkers trying to find somewhere that will sell a base sheet/liner for my sandpit at home. It needs to be breathable so the sand doesn't go mouldy. Do you have any ideas where i can purchase some? I was wondering if a weed membrane might do the trick... thank you x
