Hi We have a staff meeting on Wednesday and don't want to look like I am just moaning so wanted to know what other settings do. We have 20 children per session and are open 5 days 9 to 3.30 and have 5 staff including 1apprentice and 2 jobshares I work 4 mornings per week. I have 12 keychildren aged 3 years and am finding doing all the learning journey's, home link diaries and the planning very hard to fit in so I am doing lots of hours at home as well as trying to make resources to develop the environment (I know lots of you do work at home). I feel quite bad moaning because the owner has been so fair with me hours changes etc but it really does bother me as I am conscien…

Can anyone recommend a range of reasonably prices bikes and scooters that are suitable for ages 2-7? I can find some for 1-4 and then 4-7 but not reasonable ones that cover both ages maybe 3-6 would be ok? Any advise would be very welcome! Many thanks,

Aahhh Just Want To Scream! Still Not Listening To Me!

Have you ever had one of those days where you just want to scream and scream and scream. We have had 4 days like this now and it is driving us up the wall. We are a small playgroup (11 max) in NI and there is myself and my Deputy as well as a volunteer and we work from 9.15 to 11.45 each day Monday to Friday. We have a mix of children - those in preschool year number 6 in total and then there are 5 who are just turned 3. As in other posts I have problems with 2 boys who do not listen to us no matter how much reemphasising of rules we do or changing the tone of our voice so that we do not seem hassled, engaging and distractive play as well as ignoring what they are …

Area Signs/children Choosing Where To Play

I have been posting on this forum earlier today and doing a lot of thinking about how we may improve things. Could any of you advise me if you follow this idea ... When children come in for indoor play time do you gather your key children together in a group and present a series of pictures of the areas in which they can play and then give them their own symbols and ask them where they would like to play first? If so does this help children settle? I am thinking of implementing this system just to see if it would help 2 of our boys who are disrupting play for everyone else - I know we cannot single them out individually but thought if we tried this system it could …

How Do You Deal With A Defiant "no"!
by Guest terrydoo73- 1 follower

Our children have started to say "no" very openly and loudly particularly to us as Playgroup Leader and Deputy Leader. Today one child was lying across the floor kicking his legs behind him. I happened to be sitting in a chair close to the area he was in and when I turned to get out of the chair he managed to kick me in my ankles. I asked the child to pull his legs in as I wanted to stand up. The child shouted "no" and proceeded to kick me again and again in the ankles. Another volunteer who had been playing with this child joined in asking him to move his feet and let me stand up, not actually saying to stop doing this as we knew that to do this would mean he would …

Snack Time

We have a buffet style snack which is going reasonably well. However there is one little boy who puts off having snack until the very last moment and then says no he doesn't want any. We have a list up on the wall to which all the children add their labels and we call them to come to the table in the order that is on the list - 4 at a time with 1 leader. We did use to have all our snack together but felt that some children were taking longer, others didn't want to go for snack and preferred to continue playing for a while and then have snack and still others refused all together. So we took all of these things on board and decided on this buffet style and it is good a…

Hi We had a visit from our improvement advisor today and she advised us to add a sheet to the front of each child's learning journey with a photo and some information about their keyworker. Has anyone done this or know what sort of information we should include??? She also said about including some information for parents about learning journey's. What do you use? Thanks

Hi all We have decided to take our children to the local farm (10 mins down the road) to link with there intrests of animals. I will be visiting before hand and will complete a full risk assessment. We have a access to a minibus which belongs to the community centre and they hire it out with a trained and crb checked driver to local charities and businesses. We have 8 children and 4 adults 3 of which of CRB checked and 2 first aiders (is this enough?) and all children will be in carseats. Is there anything I have missed? Also, does anyone have a permission form for parents they wouldn't mind sharing with me I am having a typical friday ev…

Hi I have been doing this job for many years but need some thoughts on how to structure my 3 hour pre-school sessions. We currently have a very much free flow environment but do stop the children for key group time, which happens early in the session, story time towards the end of session and circle time to say goodbye. Would just like to hear from other sessional settings as to how they run them. Look forward to hearing all responses.

Staff Problems

I hope I have posted this in the right area and would appreciate your thoughts. I am Leader at a village pre-school and was interviewing today along with my personnel officer. Due to restrictions in our setting we were in the kitchen with the door shut. A member of staff had to come in and knocked before she did. Another member of staff threw the door open and marched in saying 'I've got to get the milk'. My personnel officer apologised to the candidate and explained the restrictions. After the candidate had gone she spoke to the member of staff explaining she thought it was rude and she should've knocked first. The member of staff retorted that she had a job to…
