Snack Table

I have a problem which I hope you can help me with - I feel I am being too heavy handed and don't know how to back peddle if you understand what I mean! We have a system of registering the order of children to have snack as it works well in terms of children enjoying choosing when they will go and who with but there are 2 boys who are proving difficult to persuade to put their own symbols up to tell us when they will be going. We just do not know what to do to entice them to the snack table. One child who is only 3 is asked to put up his symbol and he immediately says "no". I will then say "do you want some toast and fruit today" and of course the answer is "no"…

Behaviourable Problems

Hi, I am after a bit of advise. We are currently looking at policies and procedures but would like to know what you would do with a child who is very challanging in an agressive manner. We already know that to get senco support (5 hours per week one to one) in our area is difficult enough but if a child had behaviour issues how would we deal with this if the child needed one to one support. We are a voluntary run preschool and struggle to pay for one to one care and dont believe we would get senco support.

Dear All I would like some opinions on a "failure to thrive" child. This is about a girl, two years eight months and looks like about 18 months, whose mum does seem to try but I feel may not have been getting the help that she might need or possibly her not giving the right information. We are quite concerned about this and want to advance things in the right direction. Anyone been in this situation beforehand please? or any good websites to help? thanks dramapixie

We have just moved our Pre-school into an Elliott hut from another part of the school. This move has been talked about for a long time and children have been involved and have seen the different stages of getting the room ready, so its not ubexpected!!! We have had one little boy, who is usually happy and settled who is completly freaking out about the move. His Mum said he hates change, has very particular routines and is possibly OCD (Her thoughts) What can we do to help him a adjust? I have suggested he comes in for short periods of time, which are then increased each day or that Mum can stay with him for a while. I am very aware that these methods are not part o…

Hi all - just wanted some opinions please! We are a charity pre-school based on a school site... and we finish earlier than the school. A neighbourhood nursery are offering pick up from us to their parents but are telling them (and us) that they can't pick up at our closing time but will pick up when school finish. We are saying no but nursery say we are not being flexible.... What do you think? I feel that we close when we close and the children should be collected at that time. But where do we go from here? hardly grounds for partnership working!! Any views or advice gratefully received!! MPS09

Are you a parent and an early years practitioner? I am looking for potential research participants who would be willing to take part in my doctoral study. The aim of my study is to investigate the experiences of practitioners who are also parents. I am especially interested to explore whether parental experiences have any impact on practitioners’ work with parents in early years and childcare settings. The working title of my research project is ‘A Life Historical study of Early Years Practitioners´ views of their experiences of `mothering´ and the influence on their professional role working with parents’. By ‘mothering’ I am referring to the nature of close and nurt…

Oh my, I am so excited! Think we may have found new premises to move our pre-school into and expand to a day nursery! After looking for 10 months and getting soooo many knock backs, this might be it! They aren't offering us quite as long a lease as we would like, but am hoping this is negotiable, plus I am hoping that the lease will then be extended yearly. The building has been standing empty for so long can't imagine they'll suddenly find a use for it. Going to have a look on Thursday, not sure if I can wait until then. Doubt I will get any sleep as I lie awake imaging what our new nursery will be like. What a way to celebrate our 25th year of pre-school!!!!!

Grant Award

As many of you know we are a small Playgroup (registered for 12 children) in Northern Ireland. Recently a parents fundraiser raised £1,300 through a coffee evening and launch of a recipe booklet. Yesterday we received notification of a grant award I had applied for before the summer - £1,900! We are absolutely thrilled as it means we can keep our parents money for essential running costs. The grant has been awarded for resources which I need to spend asap. We have already thought of a new snack table and chairs, threading fruits, bricks, airport and accessories, hospital and accessories, police station and jigsaw puzzles. I have identified some other items we …

Chistmas Gardening Ideas Please!

We recently held a fundraiser and one of the parents came up with the idea of getting the children to decorate little pots to put plants in - the purpose was to sell on the night of the fundraiser. Unfortunately some of them didn't sell and there were other plants donated as well - so we have cyclamen and heathers mostly left. We have tried to get rid of these since by asking parents if they would like to take one and maybe put a little donation in a box but no takers! I was looking at them today and thinking what I could do with them - we do have pine cones as well and I thought of something decorative as a way of a gift made by the children to parents but that is …
