I was surprised at the sort of foods that were allowed to be sent in by parents for my child's KS2 Christmas party (I was helping out so I was complicit in it). The school holds 'Healthy School Status' and I didn't expect to see so much rubbish. I'm tempted to have a word to the Head Teacher. Makes my setting very boring by comparison. When the children were in KS1 there was a list of required items which were generally healthy with just a few treats. What would you put on your list if you were making one? Or should I just butt out and let them have their fun? Honey

Well my question is just as the heading!! I HATE mixing up paint - and so bought lots of 5 litre bottles of ready mix - sheer bliss! However, we do have a very large stock still of powder paints and I just wondered if anyone knew how long it will last if I were to mix up a big batch and refill my 5 litre bottles..... Any ideas? Thank you!

A Child That Just Doesn't Listen And Do As We Ask

We have tried the usual methods with this child - distracting, engaging in other play, discussing what will happen if continues to not do as asked and even my deputy came up with the idea of the little Christmas bird sitting outside our window who will fly to Santa and tell him that we are sad as she is not listening and doing as we ask. Today she came in from the toilet, went to the sand tray and with her 2 hands lifted up some sand and threw it over a child playing there. She knew she had done wrong immediately and started to laugh at us when we asked her to come out of the area until we dealt with the upset child. She then went to the couch and cried! When my deput…

HI, I have been at my new job for four weeks, i am the senior nursery officer and pre-school room leader. it is not often that there are occasions when neither the manager or owner are in the building, but it can happen say once a week between 5 and 6:30. The other day the owner announced that she had just realised there needed to be a named person in charge when her or the manager were not there, so the owner has decided to give this responsability to a member of staff that has been there since the nursery opened (8 months) who knows the building well and who has a key, this person is level four qualified and works in the pre-school room effectively under me in term…

Hi, I have just (on friday) been told that I have been accepted onto the eyps course starting on 13th January and now I have got to find a member of staff who is level 3 to cover me on a friday. We are only open 9-12am and have a very low number of children as we have just opened and so I will only be able to afford to pay this person the minimum wage as we are currently only just drawing even and so her wages will have to come out of my pocket. Any advice on where/how to advertise this and do u think someone will actually want to only work for 3 hours a week on minimum wage? I know I've not got long. Thanks

Car Park Resolution/outdoor Play Area
by Guest terrydoo73- 1 reply

We currently have a small outdoor play area which has been ruled out for using with rideons basically because of its size and risk to children and also it is on a slope which is much more of the risk if you understand what I mean! So we have looked at our lovely new tarmac car park just beyond the outdoor play area. The only solution to having an area for ride-ons is to go across the car park rather than up and down to avoid this slope problem. This is a massive area - we reckon about 10 - 15 feet in length which would provide massive area to avoid any knocks etc for children. However our Early Years Registration will not pass it without an easy pack up and put away s…

Hi all asking advice from mixed aged setting we are a new preschool with children aged 2 to 3 years I am finding that the 3 year olds are getting frustrated with the younger children interrupting their play. We are a pack away setting in a large hall how do you organise your day keygroups any advice greatly appreciated. I was thinking of dividing the hall in two and having the three year olds in one half and two year olds in the other but dont know if this was achievable.

Updating Policies - Help!
by Guest terrydoo73- 5 replies

Our Playgroup has been open a year at the end of January 2012 and I am starting to review the policies put in place for our Early Years Registration - it is amazing how many changes have occurred since then! My Early Years Registration advisor has suggested that I take a set number each month that relate specifically to parents (ie those we included within the original information booklet) and revise them, then point this out by way of the monthly newsletter to parents. One situation that has arisen is in relation to our fees. We had set £15 a week which is basically £3 for a 2 1/2 hour session but to get the Playgroup off the ground we lowered this to £10 a week fo…

Fundraising Event

We are holding a fundraising coffee and craft evening on Friday week to launch a little recipe booklet produced by the parents and friends of children presently attending our Playgroup. We are a small playgroup - just 11 children and have lots of parent support for this event - baking pastries and cakes as well as sewn things! One of our volunteers has come up with the idea of painting some plant pots, planting them up with a little evergreen type plant and selling these on our stall as being something made by the children themselves. I am looking for another couple of ideas of simple things the children could make to sell. Also I am also starting to think about Ch…

Hi all, Can any of you recommend a book or website where I can get some good examples of role play areas. I am not the most creative of people so any ideas or advice welcomed. Thanks
