We have a new little girl starting on monday. She has just turned 2yrs old and came to visit on friday. She was very happy exploring the room and we decided mum should leave her for a short while. She was fine and happy for the first 10-15mins but then started crying and screaming. After 10 mins of this screaming I decided to ring mum as I didn't want the child to have a negative first visit. Mum was grateful we rang and stayed with the child for another 30mins during which time the child left mum and continued to explore the room. Does anyone have any advice on how we should handle the situation on monday? She is coming at the start of the session as mum and us agr…

How Do You Deal With A Child Who Refuses To Do As You Ask? 1 2

We have a child who just turned 3 today. We are a 2 1/2 hour playgroup and this particular child only attends on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The child knows what we are asking and will outright say "no". Today we were coming inside from playing. We have a large Little Tikes climbing frame and this child went into the tunnel and lay in there. He refused to come out no matter what we tried. We did ask him quite a few times but he just stayed in there. My problem was I needed to open the gate to let other mums in and at the same time needed to be inside with the remaining 10 children. How should I have dealt with the situation. The thing was - this was his birt…

Polish Christmas!
by Guest- 2 replies

Hi We are beginning to start christmas preparations in our Nursery e.g. play rehearsal. This year we have decided to do a small carol concert instead of a nativity play due to the ability of the children in the class. The children will still dress up and some will have a word or simple phrase to say but we are going to keep it simple. We have three polish children in the class so really wanted to teach the children e.g. jingle bells in polish to sing at the concert to show inclusion. I am having difficulties finding a cd with children's polish songs on, can any one recommend one or recommend any other way of us showing inclusion during the christmas carol concert…

I am posting on behalf of a colleague who is meeting with some 'powers that be' from NCMA regarding the propsed opening up of NCMA to other childcare providers such as foster carers and also the proposed new Professional Standards. She would like to hear from you whether you are NCMA member or not. All information is treated as confidential and she will delete your email address immediately after. Please contact Penny at pennys.place@hotmail.co.uk thank you so much, once you have done this ask your colleagues to do one as well - together we have a voice.

Hi, We had a visit from our improvement advisor yesterday who said we should not sit down all together for snack but should have a snack bar which the staff go to as and when the children do and we should let the children cut their own fruit and pour drinks as and when they want them. I think this would be lovely to do except all our children are 2years old and one in particular is being observed as possibly special needs, she has no speech or understanding of rules/boundaries. for example, she attempted to paint the wall the other day and when we said no she just kept trying until we took the paint away! my worry is that she spend most of her morning at the sna…

Hi, I am new to nursery this year and at the moment everyday we do daily phonics or time for talk sessions. Phonics sessions tend to be whole class and time for talk sessions tend to be split into two groups. Would you recommend always splitting into two groups for continuity and also do you split by any criteria? Age? Also how do people organise their keyworker time? So may questions! Thanks!! Senses

We are focusing on the 5 senses during November and linking it on to Road Safety. I have come up with the idea of putting baby oil in the paints, peppermint oil in the dough and probably use some items that float or sink in the water tray. I am also hoping to use small pieces of cloth to make a smelly pouch with the children in the arts and crafts area. I am stumped with the sand. We have used dry sand with sieves in September and wet sand during October with yoghurt pots and moving on to larger buckets at the end of the month. The sand has obviously dried out now so it is back to sieves but I want to try something else - perhaps something hidden in the sand? We do …

Our room is very very small and we are limited in what we can do. So let me describe what we have so far! In the back corner we have a 6 deep shelve unit which we use for bowls saucepans etc. Then in front of that and facing into the room from one end is the larder cupboard, sink, cooker, washing machine all in wood and good quality. We have a table to one side with 2 chairs. We usually put out saucepan and frying pan with pretend potatoes and veg as well as meat then in the larder we have a bowl of fruit along with a host of real items in terms of packaging - butter, egg carton, bisto gravy, cup a soup box etc etc We usually have the table set with a plate, knif…
