Hi all, I know how good you all are so I though I would ask for some help!! I have come across a HUGE box in the back of our storage shed full of tubes, connectors and big chunky wheels, which are a stamped with TAC TIC. I have been trying to find out how it all goes together - but trying to do a google search has been fruitless so far, just noughts and crosses coming up!! Does this sound familiar to anyone? and can you point me in the right direction for more info?? Many many thanks!!

Fundraising - Cookery Book

Our Parents Group has come up with the idea of publishing a cookery book to raise much needed funds for the Playgroup. Has anyone out there ever done this? I do not know the first thing about costs in terms of getting it professionally printed or should we go down the road of in house publishing using say a laser printer? What could we include within it to make it more personal to the Playgroup ie should we include little pictures the children have produced?

Home Corner

We are a playgroup just back 3 weeks. Some of our children returned to us from June and we want to enhance our home corner for them. At present we have out the usual plates, cups, spoons, knives, toaster, kettle, bread, breadboard and knife with a saucepan for potatoes and an egg cup with egg in it. Then in the larder cupboard are loads of things like milk carton, butter carton, biscuit tins and other "real" looking items as well as the usual large handled utensils like potato masher, wooden spoon etc. All our children do at present is take everything off the table ie plates etc and dump them into the sink then pretend to wash and dry and put them back out again. …

Can anyone recommend a good website designing service or have they seen any exceptional nursery websites who I could ask advice from? I want to keep it fairly simple as a visit is best but just to stand out from the rest in my area!!!

Outdoor Shed/storage

We have managed through a couple of grants and parents fundraising to purchase an outdoor shed and some ride-ons. The rideons are at one side of the shed which we can partition off so the children don't automatically get to take them out everyday as this is what we want. On the other half we have at present situated our sand tray and are thinking of a little cooker at the back corner. What would you suggest we use our shed for? It is quite large - 12 x 10 - huge in fact but it will hopefully provide us with overcoming the problem of the weather as the children can run in and out so something that is easily pushed to one side would be ideal. Any suggestions?

Observations Of Children

Firstly I have to say we are in Northern Ireland so don't work to the same system as rest of UK. We have just started back after our summer break and want to get to grips with observations as think we are doing them too detailed. We have devised a list ouselves of what we should be looking for ie can they hang up their coat themselves? are they happy enough to come to Playgroup and be separated from parent, are they able to attend to themselves when washing, do they know to put on an apron for painting etc etc Is there a list anywhere that we could download to show us what observations we should be doing rather than repeating ourselves for the sake of having some…

How To You Get Children To Respond?
by Guest terrydoo73- 6 replies

We do a story and rhyme time at the end of our session every day. Unfortunately, probably due to a lack of confidence one of our children does not participate and just watches. I have no problem with this but I would really love to help work on her and encourage her to join in. Any tactics I could use? We do use lots of actions when saying the rhymes and can see children doing these even though haven't got the words completely. We repeat the 4 rhymes over a 4 week period and then they will get used to them - at the moment our rhymes our Incy Winsy Spider, Row Row Row your boat, The Wheels on the Bus and Peter Hammer has one hammer. Perhaps I could use a book of some…

Ratios

This could be long so I apologise, but I am stressing myself out, so I hope it makes sense. I have recently moved settings within my company and I am really struggling as in the room I work the ratios are not being maintained. The management have the ‘it’s always been the same’ attitude, but that is not good enough for me and I’m not sure what to do about it. Last week in the room there was myself and another qualified member of staff until 1.30 then from 1.30 I get an unqualified member of staff who is frankly no more than a pair of hands. This is an example of the children I had last week: 2 - two year olds 12 - 3 year olds leaving me 2 children o…

Hi everyone, I'm just wondering if you very knowledgeable lot could give me a little bit of advice... I am a Nursery teacher and I had a parent approach me to say that her daughter (aged 3) is refusing to eat at home and she is saying that she is 'too fat'!! I am so shocked that a three year old can have this opinion of her self and that our society has done this to her! I want to do some discrete PSED to address this issue with the class, does anybody have any ideas? I am an NQT and I have never been presented with this situation - or ever dreampt that I would be presented with this situation in Nursery! Thank you in advance for your support and ideas on thi…
