Just noticed on Twitter that there's a petition organised by Early Education against the Single Funding Formula. If you're concerned, you can sign it here! More information about the campaign against the single funding formula can be found here, along with details of a toolkit designed to help settings prepare for discussions with their LA about the problems caused by the SFF and also to measure its impact on their settting. I know the ratio for 2 yr olds is 1:4 adults to children and 1:8 for 3 yr olds. Does this change on a childs 3rd birthday or is it in the term thay are going to be 3? For example can they join a nursery class for 3 yr olds in the term they are 3 rather than on or after their 3rd birthday?

Hello everyone, its been while since I posted on here but I've enjoyed following some posts. I start by apologising if this has come up before! Myself and other staff work on the EYFS profile - called our 'Special books' inserting observations and post it notes with footnotes stating which profile point has been acheived. An A4 page with eight sticky notes each side x 3 for each subject. (is this the norm?) Its alot of notes. Now and then there is the excitment of a photo, an example of work or 'the work itself' ! All in all its alot of hard work and very time consuming. I've developed a more informative style of note taking that tells the reader what has been acheive…

How Would You Change The Eyfs

OK Here's your chance. As soon as this is looking interesting I will email link to Clare Tickell from Action for Children who is in charge of the review. The scope of the review is not only on what should children be achieving at what stage - but also includes "should all settings have to do the same - and hence by implication, the whole method of observing and recording is up for discussion.

Hi We bought some Yeominis telescopic gardening tools, such as the rake and the spade, from The Consortium. Unfortunately 3 of the 4 long metal shafts have sheared in two over a few months. The Consortium have refunded our money but can anybody recommend tools that have stood the test of time? We have a large outdoor sandpit and a digging area. By the way, the garden project has finished now to very high praise indeed from our early years consultant for outdoors. It has been a long hard year, what with this and starting a new job as manager (hence not coming on here as much), but the children get so much more out of the outdoor area now.

Hi guys, quick question. When in a whole class teaching input, an objective might be (C4 Understanding 2 groups as addition) and the majority of the class have achieved that objective, & you know that through observation and listening to the chn in their play. Well what about the other children who still need support & one to one help ? In EYFS is it ok to put them in ability groups for PSRN, CLL PHONICS etc. I would think that would be easier because you are tailoring each child individual needs. But that sounds a bit too like year 1-6. Would love to hear your views on this one, Ill have 28 in my class next yr and one full time Nursery Nurse. …

I run an after school club. Several of our children have been observed by us doing way more than the stuff recorded on their profile as given to us by school. For example, one child's mother was disgusted to be told in child's report that she could use numbers up to 10 when mum and we had seen her using numbers to 40. Also one child still had not achieved initial letters and sounds on his profile which we were given several weeks after he did us a lovely picture of a DOG YOWNIT van. 2 different schools. So what is the point of what the schools are doing - and especially what is the point trying to correspond with the schools. We only got given this stuff because …
