Weapon Play

After reading the book by Penny Holland (We don't play with guns here) and looking at the case studies on the DCFS (I think) about boy's achievement I was keen to have a policy in my setting where no particular kind of play is banned, only the usual rules about not hurting people etc. I thought we had all agreed to this (teachers and nursery nurses in reception and nursery) but it's clear that people are unhappy about it. The staff have also told me that parents have mentioned the fighting, so I've got to tackle the problem of making the policy clear to parents. Has anyone else done this, and what is their experience ?

I have a friend who works in a large sessional nursery and is being asked by the early years team for evidence of her value added during the children`s time with her. How would you show this in your settings. Thank you.

Hi guys Just joined and looking for inspiration with regards to planning formats, having just chucked out our extensive and robust old planning system to hopefully better meet the FYFS requirements to be child centred. We're observing daily and planning from obs for following day, is anyone else doing it like that, with out any 'topics' as such, just themes from the children running through activities. Just concerned we're going to have enough evidence for Ofsted when they come in. Any good ideas and suggestions gratefully received! I keep seeing proformas on net for long, med and short term plans, which I thought (wrongly?) were not used now? We run learn…

Records Of Achievement

Good morning, Just a thought. If we are not to use the development matters as a checklist for achievements, then what are most people using instead. We are in a primary school nursery class and use the usual observations, scrapbooks etc. But do feel that we need some checklist of development. Have always used the stepping stones and a final assessment before leaving for school. But wondered if anyone has thought of something else to use? Have a good Rememberance Sunday Thanks

I have spoken to two of our childminders and have discussed the possibility of sharing the learning journeys for the children we have joint care of. Both childminders are very enthusiastic and are willing to come to a meeting to discuss what issues may need to be addressed. One of the childminders has brought in her learning journeys that she has done so far and we have had initial discussions how we can incorporate it a larger one. We have discussed getting consent from the parents and also how we can ensure that we all have access to the learning journeys. It looks like once a month I will have a childminder group in a morning when they bring their other childr…
