Hi, If children are involved in non-domestic role-play but not yet really adding a proper storyline I put them at 30-50 months (it's a bit more than the 22-36 statement of beginning to make-believe by pretending). There isn't a direct statement to match but I think it's 30-50 months - what do you think? In the same area, the statement 'Notices what adults do, imitating what is observed and then doing it spontaneously when the adult is not there' - what is your understanding of this? Green Hippo x

Do you include all things to do with nature within 'Comments and asks questions about aspects of their familiar world such as the place where they live or the natural world' E.g. commenting on buds turning into leaves in Spring? or do you think it refers more directly to natural environments? Child (48m) is using a torch in a darkened room. She discovers that the light gets bigger as she moves it away from the floor and says "The light's getting bigger!" She is looking closely and commenting on the change/difference but I can't decide if this is enough for evidence towards the 40-60+m band. Any thoughts?

Hi Just wondered how you would interpret Selects a particular named shape. (40-60) I think eg child chose a triangle to be the top of the rocket and a square for the body of the rocket and could talk about why they had chosen that particular shape? Any other thoughts/ideas? As a staff team of only 2 I must say I value the discussion about these statements...especially as some seem to be the same as others. I have now kept a record of all those discussed on here as a way of moderating ourselves. Thanks everyone. Keep up the hard work.

Hi, What do you think? We have a number of children who can complete a simple program on the 'Education City' program. We open the main program and find the EYFS section and then select English/Maths/Science from the menu for them. These children are then able to select a game by clicking on a large icon and follow the games through - all games start by pressing on the green 'START' button and then are completed by clicking on numbers/pictures etc depending on the game usually with instructions e.g. "click on the number which tells you how many ..." etc. To complete these games the children either use the mouse or the interactive whiteboard pen and only need to know to …

I'm having a mental blank about what "Understands that different media can be combined to create new effects" (DM 40-60 months) might look like. I can't think of any examples that I can use either to look for children doing it or to give them opportunities to do it. This makes me suspect I haven't given them any and I'd really like to! Can anyone help?
