OK so I am having another in depth discussion with myself about DM writing statements so thought I would see if any of the rest of you would care to add your thoughts! Writing: 22-36 Distinguishes between the different marks they make 30-50 Sometimes gives meaning to marks as they draw and paint 30-50 Acscribes meanings to marks that they see in different places OK, so for the 22-36m one I would interpret that as the child saying "that's a squiggley one, that's a big one" My confusion is the 30-50 ones. I have read on this forum two schools of thought, 1) Sometimes gives meaning... can be in a pictoral context "This is a spider" "This is a sad face" or 2) Som…

Hi We have a little boy at our setting who is quite good at numbers. He can count by rote to 15 and give us 1, 2or 3 items when we ask etc. Today we played a game with a dice and he was able to count the spots by touching one spot for each number (from 1-6) very confidently. Where would you put this in development matters? The only place I can see is in 40-60mths but he is only 29 months so dont want to put him higher than I should! Thanks

Problem solving

Where oh where do you does problem solving (not mathematical) come in DM statements. Crital thinking/problem solving isn't really covered anymore except as CoEL. Observed a little girl today roll a tyre round the garden to a larger one, use it to stand on larger one. Cyldn't manage it, adjsted the smaller tyre, then went to get a tyre to get on top of it, and managed to climb onto larger tyre. APart frm physical aspect, what other DM statement can I get in my obsv. Next steps: Any ideas.... showing others how she did it? as it was solitary play. Finding other climbing challenges or ways of moving over/round obstacles? Tks.

Just need to clarify ... ... 'Continues a rhyming string' (Writing) A child can WRITE e.g. cat, mat, hat, rat - unsupported 'Continues a rhyming string' (Reading) A child can continue a rhyming string during a play situation 'Hears and says initial sounds in words' (Writing) A child can WRITE e.g. cat as he sounds out the word c-a-t 'Hears and says initial sounds in words' (Reading) A child can suggest other words with the same initial sound Apologies for asking such an 'obvious' question!

Hi Guys New to forum today and very excited to move to FS in September at my new school. When considering assessments I have been told that under no circumstances should we highlight the DM statements to show what children can do but I havent been told why. I know that at my last school the FS team did highlight the statements, colour coding them for different terms. They didnt do this with the ELGs but told me that the unhighlighted statements instantly showed the gaps (which were often due to lack of experiences given). Please help if you can? Many thanks

Hi What is the difference between these two statements? Imitates movement in response to music and Creates movement in response to music They are both in 30-50 months in EAD but one is in Exploring and Using Media and Materials and the other in Being Imaginative Also, what would you expect to see before you said a child "notices detailed features of objects in their environment"? Sorry if these seem obvious!
