On 25th March Tapestry held a live online event on the theme of Reflecting on Anti-Racism in the Early Years. The event was co-hosted by Liz Pemberton, who runs the training and consultancy company The Black Nursery Manager, and the speakers were Shaddai Tembo, a lecturer at Perth College UHI and doctoral student at the University of the West of Scotland, and Faith Chow, an early years Speech and Language Therapist with specialist interest areas in bilingualism and autism. One of our new articles for October, by Liz Pemberton, asks us to think about how we talk about race with young children. Are we prepared for their curiosity? Are we educating ourselves and doing the anti-racist work ourselves so that we can be prepared? Are we ready to keep learning and growing from our own mistakes? This Book Is Anti-Racist: 20 lessons on how to wake up, take action, and do the work by Tiffany Jewel To understand the value of this book, an acknowledgement of your place on the road to anti-racism is important. In addition to this, an appreciation that there is no finish line on the road is vital. My personal journey, like many other white people, didn’t begin until 2020. I have a long way to travel, but I feel there is no better companion in the early days of your journey than this thought provoking and informative book. Early Years anti-racist trainer and consultant Liz Pemberton is going to be repeating webinars from her 3 part series How to Explore Race with Children in the Early Years. All the sessions will be during the last week in June, and individuals don’t need to book onto all 3, but can choose which ones they would like to, or are able to, attend. This is an opportunity to fill in any gaps if you weren’t able to come to all 3 webinars in the past, or to come to all of them if you haven’t attended before.
