I’ve been planning to post this for a few months but have been struggling to find the wording. The last year has been quite turbulent for me and my family following my older daughter starting high school last September. If you bear with me I’ll explain my experiences and hopefully you’ll understand why I am sharing this on FSF. C was looking forward to high school but on her first day there she realised that she couldn’t cope. We went half a term of coaxing, bribing, blackmailing and forcing her to attend before she began to refuse to go altogether. She was apparently developing school phobia for which she was referred to a clinical psychologist. I will miss out t…

Speech Iep

Hi, I have a couple of children who I am referring to speech therapy because their speech is very poor. I am pretty experienced with SEN but unsure what to put on their IEPs. It was the same with another girl last year. They have no resulting behaviour or learning difficulties they just need support from a group where they learn to articulate and get exercises to practise. Last year the gap between referring the child and them actually attending the group was 6 months and I never recieved any ideas of a programme of activities to carry out in pre-school. If I have referred them then surely they are on Early years action so need an IEP but I am not a speech ther…

Hello, I am quite new to the forum and would like to introduce myself. I am an NQT Reception teacher and have a little boy in my class who is EAL and keeps calling out during story time and wanted to ask for advice on how to handle this correctly from the beginning if anyone can help please! He is an internal child from the Nursery and during his time he did receive a lot of 1:1 tuition and was allowed to just wander around and do whatever he wanted during carpet time. However, I want to make sure he understands from the beginning that he is the same as everyone else and needs to behave the same. His English is really improving and his mum has said that he even speaks…

Hi. We are making a referral to SALT for a little boy who is otherwise bright and achieving, but he is consistently missing his initial letter sounds (..issors, not scissors, ...ook, not book). We have got Mum on board and she has asked for some tips she can use at home, especially as the SALT waiting list is very long here. We've suggested modelling good language, which she does already. No dummy, except for bedtime Fun sound games such as animal sounds with toys (sssssssssss with a snake etc) Lip games (blowing bubbles) using a mirror What would you add as your Top 10 Tips?

Early Years Action?
by Guest- 7 replies

What is the definition of this? I thought it was if you were having to do something different for a child in order for them to access and manage in your normal provision be it behaviourally, physically or whatever. So, if I have a mum who wants me to provide a sticker chart for her boy, soft toys for him to squeeze at carpet time and the opportunity to run around on the big field everyday rather than play in our garden is he on EYA?. Mum wants me to do these things but things i am am mad to even suggest that her child might need an IEP. Am I mad, dear reader?

Extreme Behaviour In Reception

Hi everyone, I have followed this site as a guest for a few months now and am always impressed with the professional and supportive advice given. I've finally bitten the bullet, joined up and am crossing my fingers for some similar advice! I teach reception in a small school (one form entry, no nursery). I have 23 children in my class, one with an SEN statement for complex difficulties. I have another little boy in the class who can be a delight. He is articulate, charming and has very good manners. However, throughout the year there have been concerns, with several agencies coming in to see him (at mums request). There have been suggestions of elements of ADHD, …
