Am I along the right lines with lots of : modelling patterns of speech, repeating sentences back, giving clues to responses in your speech outdoor play games singing and traditional repetitive stories ?stories from first language culture? visual timetable picture clues getting to know a few words in first language dual language books music and listening games ?promoting a buddy? I am surprised that the guidance doesn't mention signing as I would h…

Hello I wonder if you can help. A little girl who is going to be starting with me soon has very little spoken words. She manages to communicate her needs through gestures very well and her immediate needs are met by parents. She is two and says na na and Da - the first for no and the second for Dad. Parents are not worried at the moment. I will work on little activities with her when she comes and show mum how she is doing - improvement wise - but what happens next if there is no improvement. Once I have documented evidence in the learning journey how do I present it to her so that she can take the next steps. I have not dealt with anything like this b…

HI I know this might sound an odd question but as the topic title might suggest I can't really give any details. However, does anyone know for sure a PEP is a legal requirement for a Looked After Child. I might have put this in the wrong place as the child does not have SEN but it is related to inclusion I am not talking about best practice but I need to find 'evidence' that a PEP is a legal requirement and my hunts so far have proved fruitless. Hello I am soon to be looking after a little girl who at the age of nearly 2 makes no attempt to say words. I wondered if anyone knows of any research into dummies and language delay. From what I have observed so far she seems to have all her needs met by using signs and gestures. Many thanks for any help you are able to give. Happy 4

Non Verbal Ability - How To Assess
by Guest- 13 replies

I have had a child (aged just 5) assessed by the speech therapist and found to have very delayed language. The SLT said I should assess his non verbal ability to see whether that was poor too. He recommended 'Lucid ability' which is far too hard. I could give up and refer to the paediatrician as I suspect this child had SLD / MLD. Any ideas?? Thanks
