We have little boy in our setting 3.5yrs. He has been with us a year but has made no friends and does not play with other children. He either wanders round the room not settling at anything for more than a couple of minutes or spends most of the time seeking out an adult to have a conversation with on a 1-1 basis. He speaks well and is able to communicate his wishes. He never takes part in snack but has just started to wash his hands and sit at the table, reluctantly. If a child comes near him he tends to flinch, back off or just burst into floods of tears making lots of noise. He is able to switch the tears and noise on and off instantly (Dad says he does this at h…

Hey Just wanting to pick a few brains....I have a child with Mobility Cerebral Palsy in my class and also a child who has stunted growth, they are the size of a 2 year old (we are a reception class and they are both 5). I have been told that I need to write risk assessments for them but have not been given any format?! Anyone had to do a similar thing or happen to know where to get a format from?! I have asked my SENCO numerous times but have had no luck. Thanks

Hello - would like your advice on the following I 'm a childminder providing funded sessions to a 3 1/2 yr old. She came to me at 2yrs and 3mths and had only just begun walking and using 1 word utterances. Parents had had some contact with a physio (signed off) and SLT but had not taken up offer of support. At first review I gently raised the suggestion of seeking support from external agencies. It took another 9mths before apptment was made with HV who then referred to Paediatrician. Child fell asleep in apptment and was not properly assessed. Since then further apptments have been missed or not taken up, a further attempt at SLT for child to attend sessions has been tu…

i have been inspired to use lighting effectively in our centre. it was more to soften the feel of the room. i have bought rope lights (are very popular - the children love it), fibre optic lights, a projector with oil disks and a light box. i was wondering if anyone uses projectors or anything similar to show images/photos etc in their setting and what do they use?

I have just heard today that a 3 year old girl in my setting is about to lose her mother to cancer. To my knowledge mum has not mentioned anything to her daughter. Dad is quiet and shy, but I think he has the support of his own mother. The girl attends two afternoons only per week, which will increase next term to two full days. Would love some help and advice to be as supportive as we can without interfering. Thank you.

Hi I attended part one of the CAF (Common Assessment Framework) training last night. It was very interesting, the paperwork side of it is very detailed. Hopefully by the end of part two I will be clear about how to write a CAF Carol

Following on from a previous thread about the inappropriate use of P scales for the assessment of SEN children 0-5, I wondered if anyone has used the Early Support Developmental Journal to track progress? I've only just discovered it and it seems ideal - but would love to hear the views of anyone already using it.. http://www.earlysupport.org.uk/decMaterial...%20generic.html
