Amsterdam Story

Can anyone help me? I'm looking for the text of a story called 'Amsterdam' which tries to convey how parents feel when they realise that their child has special needs. It compares the reaction to arriving at a different country from the one you thought you were travelling to. Its a very moving piece but I've lost my copy. Does anyone recognise what I'm talking about?

Sen Code Of Practice And Caf
by Guest- 6 replies

Hi all Does anyone know how the CAF fits in with the graduated response described in the 2001 SEN Code of Practice. Does it replace it or run alongside it - and if so at what stage does it slot in? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Starburst

Sen Nursery Class
by Guest- 1 reply

Hi I am teaching a mixed nursery/reception SEN/regular class! I currently have 3 SEN 3 year olds and 2 regular 4 year olds. I need help. This is my first year teaching in Special needs and I have previously taught in reception, so to have 3 3 year olds who are definetly working below their age is proving very tough. I am really struggling knowing what to plan for carpet times and group/independent activities bearing in mind that most of carpet times are spent bringing them back and asking them to do something I want just gets ignored or ends in a tantrum! I try and play with them and what they are interested in but when they do not talk this is harder than it seems…

Toilet Training Sen

Hi I really need some advice regarding toilet training two 3 year olds who both have special needs. One is communication mostly the other has down syndrome. This is my first year teaching special ed and I am very lost at knowing the best way to help them and also their parents. What steps would you recommend? They are both in pull ups, neither communicates when they are wet at all and sometimes are reluctant to be changed. The one with communication needs is I think very ready as he often stays dry for long periods (which makes it very difficult to know when he is likely to be wet). Any help very gratefully recieved. Thank you

Autistic Child In Reception
by Guest- 6 replies

I need some help! I have a new reception class and a girl who is severely autistic. This child is very much in their own world, babling away to herself and not able to communicate. She does have 1 to 1 support but that really is helping as she cannot stop when others stop, wants to sit on the carpet with the other children, but cannot sit without disrupting the whole class. If you try and remove her she screams. I don't know what to do? Anyone any experience or can give me any advice please?

Eyfs, Iep's And Planning

Hi I have recently taken up a new post, working in a pre school assessment centre. One of the tasks that I have is to update planning. Is there anyone who is willing to share how they plan for SEN? Our children come to us for 2 sessions a week as well as attending PVI or state nursery. We have a variety of children in at a time and each child has an IEP that we work on. I need to look at linking in EYFS, IEP and continuous provision into something that is manageable. Not sure if that all makes sense but would welcome other peoples ideas. Thanks Gem

Mobility Buggy

I know someone out there will know the answer to this one! We have a child on the Autistic Spectrum who is 3 1/2 who has just had his formal assessment and is waiting a place at our local sen maintained nursery & school. Mum has back problems and doesn't drive. The child struggles to do a whole morning with us and invariably falls asleep at 11 ish, when we have to put him in his push chair ready for his mum to walk him home. He is very tall for his age and his current pushchair is too small. Mum really needs a mobility pushchair in the next size up. She has been told by the powers that be she isn't eligible for a chair as the child can walk. I feel this is …
