Bit Of Advice

I have a young boy who is 3 and a half. He's had behavioural problems in the past i.e constant wetting, outbursts but he is a very affectionate boy and at the time there were a few changes in family arrangements so it died down again. At the advice of the area senco he was placed with the two year olds again as we noticed he had difficulty dealing with large groups. This was all working well until 2 - 3 weeks ago. He has become violent - often without cause - with quite extreme temper outbursts. Today he threw a table, chairs, books anything within reach. Previously stamps and stickers have worked for encouraging positive behaviour. However other staff aren't very consist…

Hi, been a while since I last posted - good to be back Have just started in new post in SEN school, early years dept, after 20 years in mainstream. A big step but I am loving it . Now I'm a bit more settled I'd like to get more involved in planning, but ours seems very complicated compared to how I used to plan (apart from the obvious differences of p scale objectives etc). Wondered if anyone might be able to guide me to any useful areas in the forum. Thanks ! Anita

Book List !

Hi guys, I'm wondering if anyone read the following PLA publications : The role of Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator in pre-school settings Working towards better practise - SEN and Impairments Encouraging positive behaviour in early years settings Equal chances Do these contain lots of info and would you say they were worth getting? I'm doing my SEN option in my level 3 and there is a list of 7 books that are classed as essential. The sceptic in me is thinking that since the course is linked in with the PLA, is it just a method of selling more books. Any info would be fab thanks very much Sal

The Bercow report has now been published, and the report, press releases etc are available to download here. Haven't had time to read it throughly yet, but the press release says:- "Up to 50 per cent of children in some areas of Britain are identified in the Bercow Review as growing up with significant speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). Without the help these children require to develop important communication skills during their school lives, the risks are multiple and lead, in many cases to: lower educational attainment; behavioural problems; emotional and psychological difficulties; poor employment prospects, challenges to mental health and, in so…

Hello all, I have read some of the previous posts and thought you may be able to give me some advice. I have an interview for a job at a special school, I need to teach a 15 min lesson on sensory/story/song/music to 3 pupils with profound multiple learning difficulties. All I know about them is that they will be working at P1-P3, I do not know their age. I wondered whether anyone has any ideas? I have had some experience volunteering a long time ago, however not with teaching, but currently work in the FS in a mainstream school - this is a job I really really want so please please help! Thought some sort of sensory story would be good? Many thanks

Hi All, Read the forum most days but don't often seem to get time to write a note. However I could do with some help and advice and wondered if there was anyone out there who could assist please?????? I work with children with complex medical and physical needs in a Foundation Class, and am trying to get to grips with what changes I need to make ready for EYFS to get it right for my very special little ones. At present we have some focused sessions and the rest of the time activities and areas are set up for the children to explore themselves, or with an adults help as many of our children can't access things independently. We find things the children respond to/ lik…

Challenging Children Query

I am going to do some work in a children's centre as a one to one support for a boy with EBD, a challenge that i have mixed feelings about;. This is for 2 days a week and i'm on supply atm. There is something that has been bugging me for a while now that i wanted to ask about. It may be a silly question but I would appreciate some advice on the matter. Obviously i want to be prepared for every outcome and this will stand me in good stead in all situations. My question is when a child runs away from a situation where he has hurt somebody or knows he's done something wrong and knows he is going to be spoken to, what action do you take? I have mixed feelings abou…

Supporting Parents

Hi. Any ideas on how to gently persuade parents to have their child fully assessed for Autism. It has been recomended by other professionals and I too have my concerns. Unfortuantly the parents do not wish to have the assessment done. I know as practitioners we can not push parents and have to respect their decision and I dont want to spoil the trust that has been built with the parents. At the same time I feel the assessment should be done. Any ideas or suggestions on how I can approach this problem?
