Hi I wonder if someone can help me, I have finally managed to get hold of a statutory assessment form, but don't seem to be able to get any help with filling it in, i have tried our Area Senco but she says it's nothing to do with her as portage are involved, i have tried portage and the person who is dealing with the child is off sick and no one seems to know when she is due back!!!! so i feel like i'm on my own here. I'm having problems with page 2, it is all about broad and specific descriptors of educational needs, please refer to 6.6 of the SEN hand book which i have done which still hasn't helped. There are two headings - one is broad descriptors, the other is…

Sen Definition?

Can I please check with you lovely lot: When is a child defined as having SEN? I know it sounds like a silly question and I feel a bit daft asking but I have been questioned at my setting as to whether a child for the Ofsted records can be defined as having SEN, he has had several ed-psych assessments, 4 visits from the local area SENCO, portage work at home and at the setting, and attends an Opp group twice a week. I think the question is being raised as he hasn't a 'label' diagnosis, but ther is ongoing assessments and IEP,s - I thought the fact he had all of this going on and a current IEP meant he is recorded as having SEN - ?? Thanks.

I really enjoy the special needs department and have only been doing it just over a year & half now! But is there anyone out there struggling with finding the time to keep up with paperwork and the making of the resources for individual children! how do you manage your time? Hi I have a 3 year old at our pre-school who throws everything and takes no notice when you ask her not to, the train set, cars seem to be a favourite, you try to encourage her to play with the toys, adult sits down sets up track etc, praises other children for playing nicely, tries to encourage her to play but she continues to throw it across the room, when you tell her no she takes no notice, when you remove her she screams, lays on the floor and throws a tantrum, then gets up and goes somewhere else to throw something else, i'm worried something is going to hit another child. We do have a child phych coming in but not for another 2 months, how do you deal with this so…

Before any school begins the process of intervention programmes for children, they need to make sure they have done all that they can in class to ensure the child has had barriers to learning removed. I have been in post for one year but I have been a SENCo for over 15 years. In all my 20 years of teaching I feel my experience enables me to look at how special needs has evolved over the past two decades and can advise and help colleagues and parents alike on many aspects of special needs. For those who do not know, the intervention in special needs comes in 3 waves. Wave one is whole class teaching- removing barriers to learning through differentiation, teaching and le…

Advice Please - Autistic Child
by Guest- 13 replies

Hi everyone... We have a little boy who has been diagnosed (if that's the correct word!?) with autism over the summer holidays...we had concerns before this and have been working closely with mum and outside professionals. The problem is his biting.....mum is very aware it happens. He comes in 3 morning sessions per week, 1 of those mum comes in to help (i'm not 100 % this is helping). I have between 18 - 23 other children in on these days so I generally spend the sessions shadowing him, watching to see what triggers his biting of etc. This takes a member of staff away from supervising the other children. I think I'm doing everything I possibly can to help t…
