Hi We have a child at our pre-school, he was 3 years old last month. He has been with us a year. He keeps hitting the other children, we have filled in an ABC chart, he just walks up and hits them, he can be walking by and he will hit them as he walks past. there doesn't seem to be anything to instigate it. We have explained that its not nice - look at how sad you have made ?????? but he just stares and says nothing. He is a very big lad for his age. If someone just touchs him etc he cries. My other problem is a girl who he hit once, months ago. She cries before she comes in, she is terrified of him, we have spoken to her, tried to explain but the situation seems to be …

Identifying Sen
by Guest- 1 reply

Does anyone know of a book that identifies each SEN eg, autism, dyspraxia, adhd with signs to look out for and advice as on what to do. The reason is that I can remember approx 4 years ago when I worked in a preschool, the then leader had a book with a blue cover which laid out each and every SEN with signs, "symptoms" and diagnosis. I have since left to move into primary school as a TA and have lost touch with her to get the title of this book. I know it's vague but does anyone know of a type of book like this? Thanx mulder "the truth is out there"

Fine Motor Skills

Hi, i'm trying to put together a IPP for a child in our pre-school. He won't go near a pencil, paintbrush etc and has poor fine motor skills. He is due to start school in september. I have done playing with playdough etc to improve muscles, threading, duplo etc but he has no interest in these toys but am desperate for some ideas to help him. He loves the train set, water play and sand. Has anybody got any ideas, dad is concerned and would like me to concentrate on mark making. My minds just gone completely blank, all i can think of is making marks in sand using your finger, could someone point me in the right direction. Thankyou

We have found out today that it is likely that a child will start our Nursery in September who will be in a wheelchair. Does anyone have children in similar circumstances? Any tips on how to make this work well, both for us and the child?

Worried About A Little Chinese Girl
by Guest- 13 replies

I hope I have put this in the right place. I am really worried about a little Chinese girl in my setting. She has been with us for 4 terms and has hardly uttered a word in all that time. She is very timid, rarely smiles or shows any sign of enjoyment of anything. She reminds me of a permanently startled rabbit! She is the youngest of 5 children and all of them were also very reluctant speakers (but did speak by the end of their time in Nursery.) She speaks in Cantonese at home. She seems to understand everything that she is asked and can follow instructions. She is extremely creative and spends a lot of time colouring, painting etc but does not interact with other…

Help With Very Delayed Speech

Hi there A friend of mine has a daughter who has recently married and now has a five year old stepson with very special needs. He attends a special school, which she seem very supportive but do not seem to help her enough in this area. When he was three the family were told that he would likely never speak. At that time all speech was, was a constant low hum sound. The family have done wonders with him, He understands a lot more.He is saying some sounds that can be construed as words now and mum is mimicking back and making the link with context. I have suggested immersing him with vocalising lots of sounds and playing with them-lots of repetition, small sente…
